Douglass wins 200th, celebrates birthday, Caston conference title share clinch

Scales leads Caston with 28; Jackson, Peterson score 13 reach for Lady Cavs

Girls basketball

Caston 63, Culver 35 (Thursday): Isabel Scales hit five 3-pointers and scored 28 points and added 10 rebounds for a double-double, and the Class 1A, No. 2 Caston girls basketball team clinched a share of the Hoosier North title with a home win over Culver Thursday.

The win was the 200th for coach Josh Douglass in his career and his 50th at Caston. The 200th win came in his 13th season and his 306th career game, and it also came on his birthday. Douglass is a 1999 Caston grad.

Douglass won 150 games at Riverton Parke from 2008-18. He is 50-14 since becoming Caston coach in 2020.

Bailey Harness added 16 points and seven rebounds, and Addison Zimpleman had 11 points and four steals.

Kinzie Mollenkopf had six points, seven rebounds and seven steals. Ann Ulerick scored her third basket of the season.

Harness, Mollenkopf and Ulerick were honored in pregame ceremonies. Senior managers Tayler Shafer and Stevanna Young were also feted.

Caston is 17-0, 6-0 Hoosier North. They can clinch the conference title outright with a win at LaVille Saturday. Pioneer, LaVille and North Judson all have one conference loss.

Rose Peterson and Kennedy Jackson had 13 points each for Culver. Jackson also had a team-high seven rebounds, and Peterson had five. Grace Sieber had a team-high four assists.

Caston outrebounded Culver 34-20 and also made more free throws (18) than Culver attempted (6).

Caston beat Culver for the third straight year.
