The four members of the Rochester boys thrower’s relay ran in banana costumes in an exhibition race after Rochester beat Whitko 73-28 at Barnhart Field Thursday. From left – Van Kiser, Mason Hisey, Jonas Kiser, Grant Clark. Hisey won the discus, and Clark won the shot put during the meet.

Harrison Dunwoody might be a state qualifier in the 110 hurdles, but he showed that he is good on flat ground too against Whitko at Barnhart Field Thursday.
Dunwoody won the 100, the 200, the long jump and anchored the victorious 4 x 100 relay as Rochester beat Whitko 73-28.
Rochester also won the girls meet 54-50 even though Whitko athletes won more events (seven) than Rochester did (six).
Whitko did not have distance runners, so the 1,600, the 3,200 and the 4 x 800 relay in both meets were not contested.
Dunwoody won the 100 in 11.2 seconds and the 200 in 23.6 seconds. In the long jump, he soared 19-4 ¾ and finished more than three feet ahead of the rest of the field.
“He’s a spectacular athlete,” Rochester coach Ryan Helt said of Dunwoody. “I was really impressed. He ran his first 200, and I think went 23.6, which is the best time we’ve had here in a long time. … He went out and long-jumped 19 feet, four-and-a-half inches. I think he practiced one day. He’s just a very explosive athlete. I liked what I saw because it gives us some new options, but I also like his willingness to try some new things and just be more open to the idea of I-can-score-bunches-of-points for our teams because we really need him. He’s the one guy that we can throw anywhere and really feel like we have a good chance to win.”
Kale Shotts, Hunter Kamp and Preston Luhnow joined him on the 4 x 100 relay.
With Dunwoody not hurdling, fellow senior Clarence Garrett filled the void and won the 110 hurdles in 16.6 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 44.3 seconds.
Other Rochester individual winners included Grant Bailey in 55.2 seconds in the 400, Caden Biernacki in 2:22.4 in the 800, Grant Clark with a throw of 41-8 in the shot put, Mason Hisey with a throw of 140-11 ½ in the discus and Tanner Horn with a clearance of 8-0 in the pole vault.
In the girls meet, Rochester individual winners included Maddie Bailon in 27.2 seconds in the 200, Kyra Doran in 15.7 seconds in the 100 hurdles, Jordyn Hackworth with a clearance at 4-6 in the high jump and Sophia Baker with a clearance of 6-0 in the pole vault.
Rochester also swept both relays. Doran, Bailon and Hackworth formed three-fourths of the 4 x 100 relay along with freshman Maddie MacLain. The 4 x 400 relay consisted of A.J. Graber, Quinn Gruss, Ainsley Horvath and Addisyn Zimmerman.
Regular season midweek dual meets are hand-timed, which are notoriously unreliable. Having said that, Bailon’s time of 27.21 seconds Thursday would have placed her third at last year’s Bremen sectional.
“It’s a PR (personal record) for me,” Bailon said. “I’ve never ran that fast before, so I was very excited. I tried to get out pretty good and then stay with the other teammates, and then once I got to the corner, I started kicking, and then I just got my arms ready, and then I just went.”
Bailon said she does not like the 200 but that the coaches tell her otherwise. She was asked what the hardest part of the race was for her – the curve or the straightaway.
“Probably the straightaway,” Bailon said. “Because the curve is when I start to pick up my pace, and on the straightaway, that’s when I get pretty tired.”
Doran continues to be one of the top area hurdlers, and like Dunwoody, she also showed off flat-ground speed in the 100 and 4 x 100 relay while taking the day off from the long jump.
“I thought in Kyra’s 100 meter hurdles, she made a great adjustment in the last meet,” Helt said. “In the last few hurdles, she got high over the hurdle, and she got a little sloppy with her arm placement. She was lower. She was much more in alignment with her arms here, so I like that she’s listening, and she’s getting better. I like our four by one. They had a couple bad handoffs and made a great time. I’ve got a lot of confidence that they can compete with anybody.”
