Rochester junior Harrison Dunwoody advanced to the IHSAA state finals in the 110 hurdles after finishing second in the event at the Goshen regional Thursday.
Dunwoody’s time of 15.31 seconds put him behind winner Carson Heath, a junior from Manchester who ran a 15.02. Penn sophomore Shamar Sampers finished third at 15.49 and also advanced.
The top three in each event at the regional advance to state, plus those meeting a difficult qualifying standard in their event.
Dunwoody is the first Rochester boy to advance to state since R.J. Keranko advanced in the 800 meters in 2023.
Dunwoody has lost to Heath in all four of his races against him this year – a dual meet, the Three Rivers Conference meet, the Plymouth sectional and now the regional – but Dunwoody has said he has a friendly relationship with Heath. Dunwoody came into the regional as the No. 2 seed in the event behind Heath.
Rochester scored eight points and finished in a tie for 21st place in the team competition. Dunwoody accounted for all eight points with his hurdles performance.
Warsaw won with 74 points.
The other three Rochester athletes competing at Goshen were in the field events.
Mason Hisey equaled his personal-best performance of 152-5 in the discus from last week’s sectional, but he did not make the finals and finished 10th.
Hisey was part of an elite group of long tossers. The top eight finishers in the discus at Goshen met the state qualifying standard of 161-4 to make state. (Had Hisey thrown the exact same distance at the Valparaiso regional, he would have finished third.)
Xavier Vance, Hisey’s senior teammate and a Wabash College football recruit, fouled on all three throws in the shot put.
Senior Trevor Walley took ninth in the pole vault after clearing 12-6.
Tippecanoe Valley
Valley did not score at the regional, which was a showcase for its youg sprinters.
Among Valley athletes, freshman Parker VanDusen placed 14th in the 100 meters in 11.87 seconds. This was 0.77 seconds slower than his sectional time from last week.
In the 200 meters, VanDusen scratched, and his spot went to his sophomore teammate Owen Omondi on a callback. Omondi placed 11th in 23.67 seconds.
Omondi and VanDusen also formed half of the 4 x 100 relay team that finished in 12th in 44.67 seconds. Grady Moriarty ran the lead leg and handed to Omondi, who handed to Hudson Shepherd, who handed to VanDusen on the anchor.
