Haughs’ 4 RBIs, pitching helps Rochester salvage consolation game at Wawasee Invite

Softball

Lady Zs take 3rd at Wawasee Invite: The Rochester softball team went 1-1 at the Wawasee Invitational Saturday. They lost to Class 4A, No. 15 Leo 18-0 in five innings in the first round before beating Wawasee 19-9 in six innings in the consolation game.

Mya Musselman and Kylie Coleman each singled in the Leo game.

Musselman took the loss in the circle, allowing nine hits and 17 runs (10 earned) in two innings. She walked five and fanned one. Rochester committed six errors, which led to seven unearned runs for Leo.

Lena Viggiano singled, homered and drove in five runs for Leo.

In the Wawasee game, Sydney Haughs singled, doubled twice and drove in four runs, and Musselman had two hits and three RBIs. Emma Howdeshell had a single, a triple and two RBIs. Maddie Heinzmann also had three hits and two RBIs.

Coleman, Carlee Blackburn and Chloe Nichols had one RBI each.

Haughs pitched a five-hitter with three strikeouts. She allowed five hits and nine runs while walking six and hitting two batters. Rochester committed two errors, which led to six unearned runs for Wawasee (1-9-1).

Rochester scored 11 runs in the top of the first and never trailed.

Leo went on to defeat South Bend Clay 8-3 in the championship game. South Bend Clay reached the final earlier in the day with an 11-1 win in six innings over Wawasee.

Girls tennis

Peru 5, Rochester 0 (Friday): The Lady Zs lost their Three Rivers Conference opener to host Peru Friday.

Peru won all five matches in straight sets.

Hannah Houston, Kim Banic and Ryli Rouch lost at singles. The doubles teams of Molly Conley and Kylie Houston and Lilli Eaton and Carli Richard also lost.

Rochester is 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the TRC.

Peru also won the JV match 4-1.

The Plymouth JV Invitational scheduled for Saturday was canceled due to rain.

Rochester at Eastern, canceled: The Rochester-Eastern (Greentown) girls tennis match scheduled for May 4 has been canceled.

Rochester at Southwood, ppd.: The Rochester-Southwood girls tennis match scheduled for May 10 has been postponed. No makeup date has been set.

Boys golf

Rochester shoots 344, takes 6th at Logan Invite (Saturday): The Rochester boys golf team shot a 344 and finished sixth out of 15 teams at the Logansport Invitational at Dykeman Park Golf Course Saturday.

Reece Renie led Rochester with a 79, Wade Shafer had an 85, Drew Strasser had an 88, Dryden Vance had a 92, and Noah Riffle had a 93.

Kokomo won the tournament with a 308. Twin Lakes was second with a 313.

Dykeman Park will also host the sectional at which Rochester will compete on June 4.

The Rochester JV boys golf team participated at a tournament at Pretty Lake Golf Club in Plymouth Saturday. Those results were not provided to RTC.

Rochester to host Hall of Fame tourney: Rochester will be the host school for the Hall of Fame Tournament at Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru. Start time is 8 a.m. this Saturday.

Twenty-one teams are scheduled to participate. Rochester will be the only area school.
