Hunting scores 17, but turnover-prone Zebras fall at Southwood

Boys basketball
Southwood 59, Rochester 52 (Saturday): Derrick Smith scored seven of his team-high 17 points in the third quarter to lead the Southwood boys basketball team past Rochester Saturday.
Dylan Stout scored 12 points, and Cole Winer added 10 for the Knights.
Luke Hunting had a career-high 17 points and added 10 rebounds, and Tarick McGlothin added 11 points for Rochester, who lost their third straight game to drop to 9-11 overall and 4-4 in the Three Rivers Conference.
Southwood improved to 10-10 and finished TRC play 5-4.
Hunting scored eight points in the first quarter and helped Rochester lead 19-12 after one quarter. Brock Bowers, Tanner Reinartz and McGlothin each hit a 3-pointer in the first quarter, and Reinartz also hit a trey in the second quarter as the Zebras clung to a 27-26 halftime lead despite leading scorer Paul Leasure being held scoreless in the first half.
Southwood outscored Rochester 18-12 in the third quarter to lead 44-39 going into the fourth.
Rochester committed 24 turnovers as compared to Southwood’s 12.
The game was originally scheduled for Feb. 3 but postponed due to snow.
Rochester had beaten Southwood the previous three years.
Rochester and Southwood were the only TRC teams to win their sectional in both 2020 and 2021.
Rochester took the JV game 42-33 behind Bryce Baugher’s nine points. Drew Bowers and Gavin Young had eight each, Robert Bozzo had six, Dylan Hook and Hunter Campbell had four each, and Colton Ferverda had three.
