Girls golf
Led by Madelyn Weaver’s 88, the Tippecanoe Valley girls golf team shot a 397 and finished sixth out of 14 teams at the Rochester Invitational at Round Barn Golf Club at Mill Creek Saturday.
Kaydence Mellott added a 100, Lily Ault had a 103, and Molly Moriarty and Cheney Canada each shot a 106 for the Lady Vikings.
Due to a COVID-19-related shutdown, Rochester did not participate in its home tournament.
Penn won the tournament with a 334, seven strokes better than runner-up Culver Academy. Culver Academy’s Reese Wilson was the medalist with a 70. Megan Kobelt of John Glenn was second with a 77.

Molly Moriarty shot a 50, Kaydence Mellott had a 52, Lily Ault had a 59, and Cheney Canada had a 61.

Girls soccer
Trinity at Greenlawn at Argos, canceled: The Trinity at Greenlawn-Argos girls soccer game scheduled for Thursday has been canceled.
No reason was given for the cancellation.
North Miami 5, Culver 4 (Saturday): Kaylee Hamilton and Baleigh Binkley each had a goal and an assist for Culver in a road loss to North Miami Saturday. Gisselle Villegas and Kenzie Banks also scored for the Lady Cavaliers (1-1).
North Miami jumped out to a 2-0 lead and never trailed. They led 3-1 at halftime.
Northwestern 5, Argos 2 (Saturday): Freshman Lily Hines scored both Argos goals in the loss. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime.
Argos, who hosts Elkhart Christian Tuesday and its home invitational Saturday, is 1-2.
Boys soccer
Caston goes 1-1 at Frankfort Invite (Saturday): The Caston boys soccer team went 1-1 at the Frankfort Invitational. They lost to Frankfort 3-0 in the first round but came back to beat Rossville 3-2 in the third-place game.
These were Caston’s first two games of the season. Frankfort led 2-0 at halftime of the first round.
“We played a good Frankfort team that pushed us from beginning to end,” Caston coach Narciso Sanchez said. “We had our moments of opportunity and a few chances that we were unfortunately unable to capitalize on. … We shuffled some players around to ease some pressure off the defensive line in the second half.”
In the consolation game, Edison Byrum scored off a Chase Brault assist in the 79th minute to give Caston the win. Brayden Breed scored Caston’s other two goals. Colby Pugh assisted on Breed’s first goal, and Rowan Jellison assisted on Breed’s equalizing goal in the second half.
Caston trailed 2-1 at halftime before rallying. Sanchez said Rossville had “an incredibly quick and tall back line that was difficult to break down.”
“It was good to see the resilience in the kids today,” Sanchez said. “Being able to come from behind and gut one out is a testament of their grit. Great win for the team.”
Caston Middle School goes 0-3 at Lakeland Christian tourney (Saturday): The Caston Middle School soccer team went 0-3 at the Lakeland Christian tournament Saturday.
Caston lost to Westview’s “A” team 1-0, lost to Victory Christian Academy 1-0 and lost to Lakeland Christian 3-0. Braeden Dausman had six saves against Westview, two saves against Victory Christian and eight saves against Lakeland Christian.
“Much of the game was played in our defensive end of the field,” Caston coach Teresa Rentschler said in a statement. “We felt good at holding LCA to three goals.”
Cross-country
Caston girls 10th, boys 5th at Jacob Graf Invite (Saturday): The Caston girls cross-country team finished 10th out of 14 teams, and the Caston boys placed fifth out of 15 teams at the Jacob Graf Invitational at Logansport Saturday.
Sophomore Delaney Strasser was 21st overall, Emma Stinson was 45th, Stevanna Young was 48th, MaKayla Lee was 78th, Bryn Brumett was 85th, and Brynn Buczkowski was 94th. No times were listed.
“I think that this season holds great things for the ladies,” Caston coach Blair Zimmerman said in a statement. “They’ve set some serious goals for themselves, and it’s exciting to see them working hard to make them happen.”
In the boys meet, senior Micah Colvin and sophomore Austin Dague, who are cousins, finished 14th and 15th, respectively. Edison Byrum was 22nd, Caleb Stinson was 61st, and Marshal Finke was 79th. Connor Sommers and Cory Brault also ran for Caston. No times were listed.
“It’s fantastic to be back out competing again,” Zimmerman said. “I can’t wait to see how this season unfolds, especially given that we had several runners away at a soccer match.”
Caston will run at the North Miami Invitational Tuesday.
Pioneer girls 8th, boys 14th at Jacob Graf Invite (Saturday): The Pioneer girls cross-country team finished eighth out of 14 teams at the Jacob Graf Invitational at Logansport Saturday. Meanwhile, the Pioneer boys finished 14th out of 15 teams.
Violet Montgomery was the Pioneer girls’ frontrunner, taking 14th place in 22:15. Macee Baker was 27th in 23:39, Kylie Farris was 59th in 25:31, Anna Shewwalter was 67th in 26:25, Maggie Steffel was 69th in 26:37, Haleigh Walker was 79th in 27:57, and Nicole Qualio was 93rd in 33:09.
In the boys race, Carson Meyer led the Panthers, taking 47th place in 20:26. Isaac Nicoll was 54th in 20:54, Thomas Ehler was 56th in 20:57, Jackson Baker was 78th in 22:11, Jack Cooper was 86th in 23:16, Brandon Cearing was 88th in 23:42, and Isaiah Irving was 90th in 24:01.
Madison Coy was 53rd in 32:07 in the girls JV race.
Eli Rans was 38th in the boys JV race in 24:21. Christian Scott was 42nd in 26:03, Jacob Zeigler was 47th in 27:58, and Ryan Adams was 50th in 28:49.
Boys tennis
Valley goes 1-1 at Lewis Cass tourney (Saturday): The Valley boys tennis team went 1-1 at the Lewis Cass tournament Saturday. Valley beat Eastern (Greentown) 4-1 and lost to Lewis Cass 4-1.
Owen Kirchenstien went 2-0 on the day, winning at No. 3 singles against Eastern and No. 2 singles against Lewis Cass.
Payton Mills and Dylan Neese won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, against Eastern. Ethan Hartman and Annakin Pettit won at No. 1 doubles against Eastern.
Neese lost at No. 1 singles against Lewis Cass. Cooper Walls lost at No. 3 singles. Hartman and Pettit lost at No. 1 doubles, and Mason Purvis and Wyatt Reiter lost at No. 2 doubles.
Reiter and Walls lost at No. 2 doubles against Eastern.
Matches were eight-game pro sets.
