Winamac senior Maggie Smith ran a 19:58 at the New Prairie regional Saturday to qualify for the IHSAA girls cross-country state finals.

Smith finished 23rd overall in a field of 239 runners and 12th among runners on non-advancing teams. The top five teams and the top 15 runners on non-advancing teams advanced to state.

The Winamac girls scored 444 points and finished 19th out of 24 teams one week after winning the sectional at Rensselaer.

Smith won the Class A race at the New Prairie Invitational on Sept. 16 and excelled once again on the New Prairie course, famous for its “Agony Hill.”

She ran a 20:31 in the first New Prairie race and was even faster Saturday in wetter, chillier conditions.

Other Winamac runners included Kadence Hoover, who trimmed five seconds off her New Prairie Invite time and finished 92nd in 21:45; Kelsey Wegner, who cut her New Prairie Invite time by 12 seconds and placed 123rd in 22:08; Kandace Kroft, who was 156th in 22:52; Avery Wegner, who was 189th in 23:32; Claire Goodman, who was 202nd in 24:00; and Lily Bennett, who was 225th in 25:33.

In the boys race, Winamac scored 657 points and finished 24th out of 25 teams.

Logan Fredel was the Warrior frontrunner in 17:54, good for 104th place in the field of 245 runners. Other Winamac runners included Nathan Pierzchalski, who was 145th in 18:26; Dylan Guilford, who was 156th in 18:35; Joel Showley, who ran a 22:02 and was 241st; and Corbin Holehan, who placed 243rd in 22:28.

Every girl who ran 20:06 or faster and every boy who ran 16:44 or faster made state.

Valparaiso won the girls team title with 45 points. Penn (102), Morgan Township (108), Lake Central (138) and Portage (196) also qualified for state.

Valparaiso’s Whitney Anderson won the race in 18:51.

Valparaiso also won the boys team title with 115 points. Northridge (119), Penn (123), Lake Central (181) and LaPorte (185) also punched their tickets to state.

Mishawaka’s Liam Bauschke won the individual crown in 15:40.
