Malchow scores 23, leads 3 in double figures as Winamac advances

Winamac 63, South Bend Career Academy 36 (Tuesday): Will Malchow scored a game-high 23 points, and Justin Potthoff and Ethan Burgess added 10 each as the Winamac boys basketball team handled South Bend Career Academy in a Class 2A, Sectional 34 quarterfinal at Jimtown Tuesday.
Brendan Hines hit three 3-pointers and added nine, and Jaybin Hines had eight for Winamac, who won their fourth straight game and improved to 15-8.
Career Academy lost their 11th straight game and finished 1-22.
Winamac has allowed 30 points per game during their winning streak.
Malchow outscored the entire Career Academy team 15-13 in the second and third quarters. Brendan Hines and Potthoff also combined to hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter.
Winamac led 25-17 at halftime and extended the lead to 49-24 after three quarters.
Winamac will play Bremen (12-10) in a sectional semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The first semifinal will feature Jimtown and Knox at 6 p.m.
Winamac has not played Bremen since a 62-61 loss in a sectional semifinal on March 4, 1999.
