Chesnee Miller

Tippecanoe Valley’s Chesnee Miller broke the school record in the 400 meters in 1:00.65 and also won the long jump, and Betty Shepherd won both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles in a three-way win over Triton and host Rochester Tuesday.

Valley scored 60 points, Triton had 46, and Rochester had 25.

In the boys meet, Wade Jones won the 200 meters and ran a leg on the victorious 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays as the Vikings won with 56 points. Rochester had 47, and Triton had 45.

Dalton Alber added a win in the shot put for Valley.

Girls

Miller poured it on down the final straightaway to beat freshman teammate Hadley Wise, who ran a 1:02.9.

Wise later won the 200 in 27.1 seconds.

Wise was not the only Valley freshman to prevail in a race as Izzy Woodruff won the 100 meters in 13.4 seconds. Woodruff was also third behind Wise and Rochester freshman Kyra Doran in the 200.

Shepherd, a regional qualifier in the 300 hurdles last year, pulled away in the final half of the race to beat runner-up Addison Albright from Triton and third-place finisher Audrey Wagner from Rochester. She also won the 100 hurdles in 16.4 seconds to beat Albright by 0.9 seconds.

The other individual event winner on the track for Valley was Bailey Bussard, who won the 1,600 in 6:30.5.

Valley also won the 4 x 400 relay in 4:22.4 despite the Lady Vikings losing senior Ava Smith to a hamstring injury early in the meet. Miller, Shepherd and Wise are also members of the team.

Miller also won the long jump in 15-4 ½. Teammate Ava Egolf was second with a leap of 15-0.

Allyson Calloway was Rochester’s only individual event winner: The sophomore won the 800 in a personal best 2:41.9. Calloway also contributed a leg on Rochester’s victorious 4 x 800 relay along with Taylor Navara, Brooklyn Chandler and Ella Hake, who won in 11:17.3.

Boys

In a rematch of their rivalry from last year’s sectional, Jones edged May to win the 200 in 22.0 seconds while May ran a 22.3.

They also had a sizzling fast race earlier in the 100 with May winning in 10.6 seconds and Jones taking second in 10.7.

Valley also showed off their depth in the relays. Jones teamed with Nate Parker, Owen Omondi and Cody Black to win the 4 x 100 relay in 44.8 seconds, and he teamed with Omondi, Parker and Brason Smith to win the 4 x 400 relay in 3:44.6.

Chris Marquez, Luis Nuñez, Eli Sterk and Isaac Whetstone won the 4 x 800 in 9:19.4, holding off Triton in 9:25.4 and Rochester in 9:25.6.

Alber was the only Valley boy to win a field event as he took the shot put in 44-2.

Rochester individual event winners included Grant Bailey, who won the 800 in 2:16.5; Reece Johnson, who won the 1,600 in 5:13.4 before finishing in second behind Bailey in the 800; Leandro Javier, who won the 3,200 in 12:18.8; Harrison Dunwoody, who claimed the 110 hurdles in 16.7 seconds; and Mason Hisey, who topped 140 feet in the discus for the second time this month after throwing a 140-4 ¼ and beating the rest of the field by 21 feet.
