Pioneer’s Dodt takes 4th in 400, misses state by 0.34 seconds

Pioneer senior Leighton Dodt finished fourth in the 400 meters at the Lafayette Jeff regional Thursday and scored all five of his team’s points.

Dodt was timed in 49.67 seconds. Fishers’ Rocky Duplessis ran a 49.33 to take third.

The top three in each event advanced to state as well as those meeting a difficult state qualifying standard. The state qualifying standard in the 400 is 49.07.

Dodt was one of five Pioneer athletes to compete at the regional.

Ian Kitchell placed ninth in the 400 and missed scoring by 0.20 seconds. The other individual event qualifier was senior Austin Brooke in the high jump, but he declined to compete after receiving a callback because he was in Florida at a band and choir competition.

Pioneer also finished 14th in the 4 x 400 relay in 3:35.03 and 13th in the 4 x 800 relay in 8:35.13.

Dodt, Kitchell and Dane Bowditch competed in both relays. Kaleb Boller rounds out the 4 x 400 team while Elliott Cooper ran a leg on the 4 x 800 relay.

Bowditch was already part of the 4 x 800 relay and then was added to the 4 x 400 relay to replace Brooke. Cooper replaced Brooke on the 4 x 800 relay.

Dodt scratched in the 800 after finishing second in that event at the Kokomo sectional May 22.

The Panthers finished in 20th place in the team competition. Noblesville won with 84 points.

This marks the first year that Pioneer’s sectional has fed into the Lafayette Jeff regional.
