Pioneer’s Layer named first-team all-state

Valley’s Bussard, Winamac’s Combs also recognized

Softball

Pioneer sophomore pitcher Lois Layer, Tippecanoe Valley junior pitcher Dalynne Bussard and Winamac senior catcher Corrin Combs received recognition from the Softball Coaches Association of Indiana in its all-state teams released Wednesday. 

Layer was named to Class 1A/2A First-Team All-State after hitting .538 with 29 RBIs at the plate and leading the team with 57 hits and 43 runs scored.

She also went 14-5 with a 1.26 ERA as a pitcher. She walked 33 and struck out 132 in 122 innings.

Pioneer went 21-11 overall and 6-2 in the Hoosier North. The season included wins over Class 2A sectional champions Rochester and Knox and Class 2A regional champion Rossville.

Combs was named Third Team All-State for Classes 1A/2A. She led Winamac in batting average (.500), home runs (five) and RBIs (27). She also had a .980 fielding percentage behind the plate.

Winamac went 20-7 and won the Hoosier North with an 8-0 record.

Bussard was named Second Team All-Stare for Classes 3A/4A. Bussard led the team in batting average (.500), home runs (four) and RBIs (22), and she also went 7-6 with a 1.91 ERA with 172 strikeouts in 106 1/3 innings in the circle. She allowed only 65 hits on the season.

Valley went 12-11 overall and 7-3 in the Indiana Northern State Conference and tied for the conference title with Jimtown.
