Pioneer sports briefs: Boys cross-country wins Cass County title; Montgomery takes 2nd in girls race

Volleyball beats Logansport in 3 after going 1-2 at LCC tourney

Cross-country

Led by second-place finisher Jackson Baker, the Pioneer boys cross-country team won the Cass County Invitational title at Logansport Saturday. Pioneer won with 34 points while Lewis Cass was second with 37.

Caston’s Austin Dague won the race in 17:48. Baker was second in 17:56. Leighton Dodt (fourth, 18:50), Carson Meyer (sixth, 19:06) and Jack Cooper (ninth, 19:59) also finished in the top 10 for Pioneer.

Freshman Austin Brooke was 13th in 20:26.

In the junior high boys meet, Pioneer finished second behind Lewis Cass.

In the girls meet, Pioneer scored 62 points and finished third in a field of four teams. Lewis Cass won the title with 31 points.

Pioneer’s Violet Montgomery won the race in 21:35, and Kylie Farris was ninth in 25:34. Other Pioneer scoring runners included Macee Baker, who was 12th in 27:01; Maggie Steffel, who was 18th in 29:05; and Amanda Harrington, who was 21st in 29:32.

Lewis Cass’ Makenna Leicht won the race in 20:33.

The Pioneer girls also finished third in the junior high meet.

Volleyball

Pioneer def. Logansport, 25-10, 25-17, 25-16 (Tuesday): The visiting Lady Panthers topped Logansport Tuesday to improve to 8-3.

Logansport fell to 2-8.

Pioneer at LaVille, ppd.: The Pioneer-LaVille volleyball match scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday has been postponed. No makeup date has been set.

Pioneer’s next match is a road match at Northwestern at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Pioneer goes 2-2 at Lafayette Central Catholic tournament (Saturday): The Pioneer volleyball team went 2-2 at the Lafayette Central Catholic tournament Saturday and now stands at 7-3 on the season.

Pioneer beat Parke Heritage 2-0, beat Morgan Township 2-0, lost to North Central (Indianapolis) 2-1 and lost to Lafayette Central Catholic 2-1.

Winamac 38, Pioneer 6 (Friday): Ryland Toloza ran nine times for 68 yards for Pioneer in a Hoosier North road loss to Winamac. Toloza had a long run of 49 yards.

Beau Mersch had a 13-yard touchdown run. Pioneer had 74 yards rushing as a team.

Brian Gluth had an 11-yard reception from Eli Nicoll.

Derrick LeGrand led the defense with eight solo tackles and five assists. He had 4 ½ tackles for loss. Logan Smith and Oscar Solano had nine tackles each.
