Wagner wins girls 300 hurdles, Hisey wins boys discus

WABASH — Rochester senior Audrey Wagner was shocked when she won the 300 hurdles at the 2024 Three Rivers Conference meet.
One year later, she was not as shocked but just as grateful.
Wagner’s win helped the Rochester girls track team score 70 points and finish sixth at the 10-team Three Rivers Conference meet at Wabash Friday.
Meanwhile, the Rochester boys scored 76 points and placed fourth out of nine teams.
Wagner won the 300 meter hurdles in 46.84 seconds. She was Rochester’s lone girls champion.
She defeated Northwestern’s Zoie Scheiffer by 1.39 seconds, and Scheiffer was the only competitor who finished within four seconds of Wagner, who won the event for the second straight year.
Wagner also finished sixth in the 100.
“I think I expected this win,” Wagner said. “I’m really glad to have it again. It feels really good to have it two times. I had very tough competition behind me, and that really pushed me to get it. And once that I knew I was ahead, I knew I had that.”
Wagner’s next big race will be the 300 hurdles at the Bremen sectional May 20. In that race, she will square off with Tippecanoe Valley junior Betty Shepherd, who finished 18th at state in that event last year. Wagner beat Shepherd in a three-way meet at Triton May 6 in their lone race against each other this year. Wagner said that she and Shepherd are “good friends.”
“I think confidence is really good,” Wagner said. “I think it can make or break your race. I’ve had my confidence definitely go up since last year because now I feel more capable over the hurdles, and I’m feeling pretty good about myself.”
Other Rochester girls who scored by placing in the top eight of their event included Kyra Doran, who was second in both the 100 hurdles and long jump and sixth in the 300 hurdles; Taylor Navara, who set a personal best of 4-8 in the high jump and finished third; Kyla Conley, who was fourth in the 100 hurdles; Allyson Calloway, who was fifth in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters; Ashlynn Weyant, who was fifth in the discus and seventh in the shot put; and Sophia Baker, who was eighth in the pole vault.
Rochester coach Ryan Helt praised Doran for juggling multiple events and scoring in all of them.
“Kyra in the long jump was pretty impressive,” Helt said. “If you look at her number, it’s not going to jump out at you, but her workload was really high today. She had four races, and it’s really hard to get in a rhythm with long jump when you’re checking in and out. So I think she ended up leading us in points – boys or girls.”
Also, the Lady Zs were fourth in the 4 x 100 relay, sixth in the 4 x 400 relay and fifth in the 4 x 800 relay.
Wagner, Conley and Maddie Bailon formed three-fourths of both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays. Doran joined them on the 4 x 100 relay, and Calloway joined them on the 4 x 400 relay. The 4 x 800 relay consisted of Ella Hake, Navara, Adisyn Zimmerman and Adison Hayes.
Northwestern won the girls title with 91.5 points.

In the boys meet, the lone Rochester champion was junior Mason Hisey, who hurled the discus 145-10 and beat the rest of the field by more than 11 feet.
Other Rochester scorers included Harrison Dunwoody, who took second in the 110 hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles; Trevor Walley, who was second in the pole vault after clearing 12-6; Xavier Vance, who was second in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 46-6 ½; Owen Prater, who took fourth in the 400; Gage Zimpelman, who was fourth in the pole vault; Bryce Baugher, who placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 20-8 ½; Grant Bailey, who was fifth in the 1,600 and eighth in the 800; Leandro Javier, who was fifth in the 3,200 and eighth in the 1,600; Maddox Jewell, who was sixth in the long jump; Clarence Garrett, who was eighth in both the 300 hurdles and high jump; and Liam Pinder, who took eighth in the discus with a throw of 120-1.
“It’s the longest jump since I’ve been the coach,” Helt said of Baugher’s long jump. “I think the last guy that went 20 that we have documented was Cory Overmyer in ‘06. Bryce, he PR’d (set a personal record) in the 200, he PR’d in the 200, he PR’d by two-hundredths of a second in the 400, and he ran four by four for us. He’s a guy who had an outstanding meet. He scored in every event here last year if I recall. He had better performances this year and didn’t score. The field was just a little tougher this year.”
Helt also praised Hisey, Vance, Jewell, Javier and Bailey, among others.
“Overall, we’re pretty pleased,” Helt said. “We figured out our points beforehand. We thought we’d be third or fourth. We ended up fourth. We had an injury beforehand. Jabez Yarber went down (Thursday), and that messed with our relays a little bit. We had to scramble some plans at the last minute.”
Helt was asked about the depth on the boys and girls teams.
“We’re much deeper on the boys,” Helt said. “We just got more boys come out this year. I actually give a lot of credit to (football coach) Ron Shaffer, who urged the football guys to come for track. We had more basketball guys come out. We give them the sales pitch that if you come out for track, you’re going to go into the summer well conditioned and ready for your fall sports, and I think we got some guys buying into that and then finding out they kind of enjoy it.
“And then in the girls, we’re not quite as deep. I wish we were a little deeper. The middle school group is really good, so if we can retain the girls we have right now and add to the eighth grade group, I think we are going to be pretty solid.”
TRC notes
Whitko has a girls track team but not a boys track team.
Whitko’s Gwen Howard won the discus with a throw of 138-3 and the shot put with a throw of 48-4 ½. She would have finished second in both the boys discus and boys shot put with those marks. She is the TRC record holder in both events. She is a Duke recruit.
Whitko’s Emerson Harper won the 100, 200 and long jump and ran the anchor leg on the victorious 4 x 400 relay. Howard ran the first leg on that relay.
Wabash’s Anna Daughtry won her showdown with Lewis Cass’ Aftin Griffin in the girls 800 and broke the TRC record in 2:22.47. Griffin was second in 2:23.64.
Wabash’s Coleson Kugler won the 100, 200 and 400 in the boys meet. He also ran the anchor leg on Wabash’s victorious 4 x 400 relay.
Wabash’s Jonas Church won the 800 and the 1,600, and he ran a leg on the victorious 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relays.
Manchester’s Carson Heath won both the 110 hurdles and high jump.
Rochester, Manchester and Whitko are the three schools that will compete at the Bremen girls sectional May 20 and the Plymouth boys sectional May 22.
