Rochester girls, boys finish 8th at muddy New Prairie Invite
Lady Z frosh Conliff, Pioneer’s Bowditch finish in top 10

NEW CARLISLE — The mass of humanity that is the New Prairie Invitational, the cross-country meet that is Indiana’s largest annual high school sporting event, became a mass of mud Saturday.
The formerly wet socks that runners, coaches and spectators pulled out of the dryer Sunday morning were the souvenirs. The conditionals also provided an extra challenge to a course known for its slippery downhill Snakepit and its inimitable Agony Hill.
In a meet marred by a lightning storm that delayed the start by nearly two hours, here is how area runners did:
Rochester (Class 1A)
The Rochester girls cross-country team scored 195 points and finished in eighth place out of 19 complete teams in the Class 1A race at the New Prairie Invitational Saturday.
Freshman Katelyn Conliff was the Rochester frontrunner, finishing 10th in a field of 167 runners in 21:35.
Other Rochester runners included Adison Hayes, who was 22nd in 22:38; Daniela Ochoa, who was 30th in 23:01; Vivian Miller, who was 48th in 23:51; Jane Gottschalk, who was 121st in 28:15; Addisyn Zimmerman, who was 126th in 29:13; Jocelynn Shafer, who was 132nd in 29:49; Trinity Baine, who was 133rd in 29:58; and Chloie Tyler, who was 137th in 30:31.
Conliff received a medal for finishing in the top 10, and Hayes and Ochoa received medals for finishing in the top 40.
“I think she’s not even begun to scratch the surface of how good she can be,” Pryor said of Conliff. “She’s like Warner but on the girls side where we’re trying to figure out exactly how she needs to attack races, where she needs to be time-wise and what she needs to be targeting because she’s one who it feels like, again, she just keeps getting faster. Running a 21:30 on this course in these conditions sets her up very well going into a faster course like Manchester, assuming the weather cooperates in the next couple of weeks.”
Addisyn Malone did not run. Pryor said she was “out” but declined to elaborate.
“She means a lot,” Pryor said. “Between her and Vivian, they’re going to close out the scoring.”
The Rochester boys cross-country team scored 232 points and finished eighth out of 25 complete teams at the Class 1A race at the New Prairie Invitational Saturday.
Freshman Warner DuBois earned a medal by finishing 12th in the field of 224 runners in 18:07.
Other Rochester runners included Leandro Javier, who was 42nd in 19:10; Tyson Wachtmann, who was 46th in 19:16; Caden Biernacki, who was 58th in 19:48; Parker Smith, who was 101st in 21:04; Lucas Scorsone, who was 103rd in 21:05; and Tommy Schwenk, who was 193rd in 25:03.
“Tyson Wachtmann had a phenomenal race,” Pryor said. “I would single him out as a potential dark horse for us to be a number two, even, on our team. He was six seconds behind Arlo (Javier) on the official results, and he definitely has the talent to move up and put some pressure on Arlo for that spot, and the higher up we can move Tyson, the better it is for our team score. Him being our number two or three is probably when we’re at our strongest as a team.”
Pryor, a 2004 Rochester grad, ran the New Prairie course eight times in high school – four times at the New Prairie Invite and four times in the semistate.
“I was able to help them before the race just know how to attack something like Agony Hill or the Snakepit when it is really muddy, wet and impassable,” Pryor said. “And just teach them how to navigate the crowd in this type of race. Able to share with them that you get out aggressive and get into the position you want to finish early because passing’s going to be difficult. And teach them honestly how to tiptoe down a Snakepit that’s slippery and muddy and rain-soaked. There was knowledge I could share from past experience, and I think they took it to heart. We only had one fall, and so I think it went well.”
Washington Township sophomore Willy Wilks was the boys individual champion in 16:50 and was just one of two runners who broke 17 minutes. DeMotte Christian won the team crown with 44 points.
The 1A girls race winner was Trinity Academy’s Annika Lute in 19:42. Washington Township took the team title with 76 points, 13 fewer than runner-up DeMotte Christian.
Caston (Class 1A)
The Caston girls had an incomplete team while the Caston boys finished 17th in a field of 25.
Junior Hannah Rogers led the girls in 23:13, which earned her a ribbon for her 36th place finish.
Other Caston runners included freshman Aliza Rudicel, who was 77th in 25:18; Ella Monical, who was 142nd in 30:59; and Emmie Lowe, who was 146th in 31:18.
The boys frontrunner was junior Daulton Oaf, who was 53rd in 19:36. Other Comets included Malakai Clayton, who was 56th in 19:46; Drew Douglass, who was 116th in 21:21; Jack Brumett, who was 119th in 21:28; Isaac Albright, who was 150th in 22:34; Carter Moss, who was right behind Albright in 151st in 22:36; Reuben Helt, who placed 172nd in 23:53; freshman Jamison Rude, who was 179th in 24:11; freshman Armando Garcia, who was 184th in 24:23; and senior Boaz Yarber, who was 191st in 25:01.
North Miami (Class 1A)
Both the North Miami girls and boys had incomplete teams Saturday.
Leah Shafer was 52nd in 24:02, and Sydney Lane was 99th in 26:36 in the girls race.
The boys team consisted of senior Michael Miser, who finished 55th in 19:44, and freshman Honor Haynes, who was 208th in 26:54.
Argos (Class 1A)
Both the Argos girls and boys had incomplete teams.
Eden Rakoczy was the lone girls runner, taking 70th in 25:00.
The boys frontrunner was sophomore Emry Stackhouse, who was 45th in 19:13. Freshman Jude Keller was 199th in 25:43.
Pioneer (Class 1A)
The Pioneer girls scored 294 points and finished 12th in a field of 19 teams while the Pioneer boys had an incomplete team.
Still, the fastest RTC area boy was a Panther as senior Dane Bowditch was 10th in the field of 224 in 17:56.
Other Pioneer boys included Eli Hines, who was 78th in 20:22; freshman Peyton Hines, who was 174th in 24:04; and sophomore Braylon Jamerson, who was 180th in 24:11.
Once again, Pioneer’s three fastest girls were freshman: Jolene Kennell was 17th in 22:25, Brylie Caudle was right behind her in 18th in 22:29, and Evie Shafer was 95th in 26:26. Avery Haselby, who was 108th in 27:16; Lenix Jasmantas, who was 118th in 28:05; Paytyn Dillman, who was 122nd in 28:24; and Zadie Fross, who was 145th in 31:07, rounded out the Pioneer lineup.
Winamac (Class 1A)
The Winamac girls had an incomplete team while the boys placed 20th out of 25 teams.
Senior Brooklyn Jachim was the girls frontrunner, placing 124th in a field of 167 in 28:59. Other Winamac runners included senior Kallie Kasten, who was 139th in 30:51; sophomore Katelyn Burgess, who was 141st in 30:57; and senior Jaelyn Huddleston, who was 164th in 40:28.
Freshman Brody Bonnell led the boys pack in 26th place and earned a ribbon for his 18:31. Freshman Ethan Showley, who was 140th in 22:23; junior Evan Burgess, who was 158th in 23:05; sophomore Austin Pratt, who was 162nd in 23:19; senior Joel Showley, who was 168th in 23:45; and junior Braylen Becker, who was 196th in 25:19, rounded out the Winamac lineup.
Tippecanoe Valley (Class 2A)
Valley had an incomplete boys team and did not have a girls team in the Class 2A race.
Sophomore Adric Shock was 122nd in a field of 190 runners in 21:27 to lead the boys team. Other Vikings included freshman Andrew Wise, who was 129th in 21:43; freshman Everest Lipsey, who was 161st in 24:04; and sophomore Darryn Miller, who was 182nd in 27:51.
Northwestern won the Class 2A boys team title with 63 points. New Prairie’s Braden Bachmann was the individual champion in 16:07. Only three runners broke 17 minutes.
