BREMEN — Rochester’s Audrey Wagner topped friend and rival Betty Shepherd from Tippecanoe Valley in the 300 hurdles at the Bremen girls track sectional Tuesday, setting up a rematch at next week’s Warsaw regional.

Wagner won the race in 46.53 seconds, excelling through the turn and holding off Shepherd through the final straight. Shepherd was second in 47.40 seconds, and Plymouth’s Eva Macey was third in 47.89 seconds.

The only other RTC area athlete to advance to the regional was Rochester sophomore Kyra Doran, who was second in the long jump with a leap of 15-9. Just as in the Three Rivers Conference meet from 11 days earlier, Whitko’s Emerson Harper beat her with a leap of 16-5 ¾.

The top three in each event are guaranteed spots at the regional. Those finishing outside the top three could also advance if their performance ranks among the top 16 among the sectionals feeding into the Warsaw regional.

Fourth-place finishers who might get a callback from the IHSAA include Rochester’s Allyson Calloway, who ran the 3,200 meters in a personal best 12:05.35; Caston’s Grace Colvin, who cleared 4-8 in the high jump; and the Valley 4 x 100 relay consisting of Izabella Woodruff, Hadley Wise, Gaby Gonzalez and Shepherd.

The Angola, Mishawaka and Warsaw sectionals also feed into the Warsaw regional.

Shepherd finished 18th at state last year as a sophomore in the 300 hurdles. Wagner, who is a senior but who is in just her second year in the event, will be trying to make state for the first time. She was a regional qualifier last year.

The weather started out brisk and damp but later turned cold and rainy.

Doran’s best jump occurred during the preliminary round. By the finals, the runway had turned wet, and the jumpers were hurling themselves into a headwind.

Rochester scored 34 points and finished seventh in the 12-team field. Tippecanoe Valley was 10th with 18 points, Caston was 11th with 14 points, and Culver was 12th with four points.

Plymouth won with 124 points. The host Lady Lions were second with 97, and NorthWood, who was newly assigned to this sectional after spending years at the Warsaw sectional, was third with 83. Culver Academy, the five-time defending sectional champion, was fourth with 78.5.

Besides Wagner and Doran, other Rochester athletes who scored by finishing in the top eight included Doran, who was fifth in the 100 hurdles; Ashlynn Weyant, who was seventh in the discus and eighth in the shot put; and Sophia Baker, who was eighth in the pole vault.

Rochester was also sixth in the 4 x 100 relay. That team consisted of Doran, Wagner and freshmen Kyla Conley and Maddie Bailon. Rochester did not field teams in the 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relays.

In addition to Shepherd, other Valley scorers included Wise, who took fifth in the 200; and Woodruff, who was eighth in the long jump.

Colvin accounted for five of Caston’s 14 points. The only Lady Comet to score in multiple events was Camila Hernandez-Rios, who was seventh in both the 100 and 400. Freshman Hannah Rogers was seventh in the 1,600.

Caston also took 11th in the 4 x 100 relay, sixth in the 4 x 400 relay and ninth in the 4 x 800 relay. Sophomore Madi Douglass joined Hernandez-Rios, Colvin and Rogers on the 4 x 400 relay, which also won the Hoosier North title Thursday.

The only Culver athlete to score in an individual event was Savanna Harrington, who took eighth in the discus. Culver was also 10th in the 4 x 100 relay, seventh in the 4 x 400 relay and eighth in the 4 x 800 relay.

The 4 x 400 relay consisted of Eliana Andrzejewski, Ava McCune, Kaira Luhnow and Maleah Johnson. The 4 x 800 relay consisted of Amelia Stoch, Ivon Torres-Escobar, Maci Reinhold and Maddison Beach.
