Seuferer stars for Rochester boys in swimming win over Valley

Bode, Brouyette, Calloway, Riffle, Ochoa all win events for Lady Zs in win

AKRON — Jake Seuferer won the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle and swam the anchor leg on the victorious 200 freestyle relay team to lead the Rochester boys swimming team to a 91-73 win over host Tippecanoe Valley Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Elena Bode, Maddy Brouyette, Madilyn Calloway, Bella Riffle and Araceli Ochoa each won an individual event to lead the Rochester girls to an 87-74 win.

Boys

Valley won eight of the 12 events in the boys meet, but Rochester outscored Valley 21-10 in the distance freestyle events thanks to Seuferer.

His time of 1:55.10 in the 200 freestyle was a personal best, and his 5:10.92 in the 500 freestyle was a high school best. Seuferer is three seconds faster now in the 500 freestyle than he was at the end of last season.

In addition, Kadin Kelly and Bradly Bickle went 1-2 in diving. Valley also did not enter a 200 freestyle relay team, essentially handing 12 points to the Zebras.

Dylan Steininger, Jake Freeman and Wes Steininger joined Seuferer on the 200 freestyle relay team.

“They had some very good swimmers,” Rochester coach Stephanie Brown said. “We outnumbered them, which I think helped point-wise.”

Marcus Smith, Carson Parker and Brandon Hoffman won four blue ribbons each each for Valley. Smith took the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly. Parker won the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

Hoffman, who was honored before the meet in senior night ceremonies, won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. He finished in the top three in both events at last year’s Warsaw sectional.

“It was not his best times overall, but it was his best times for the year that he’s gotten so far,” Valley coach Katelyn Bradley said. “I think he wished he did better in some areas, but you could definitely tell he was pushing. He was giving his best out there. Hopefully, as we continue to see more competition, that just continues to grow for all of our boys honestly.”

Smith, Parker and Hoffman also represented 75 percent of Valley’s victorious 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams. Freshman Isaac Whetstone, who was second to Seuferer in both the 200 and 500 freestyles, was the fourth member of both relays.

Grady McGriff, unable to swim this year due to a shoulder injury, was also honored on senior night.

Girls

Valley did not enter any girls in diving or the 100 butterfly, which gave Rochester 19 points. Brouyette won the diving with teammates Kendyll Bradley and Ava Thomas finishing second and third, respectively.

Bode and Bradley went 1-2 in the 50 freestyle, and Bode and Bradley each also swam a leg on the victorious 200 freestyle relay, and Bradley swam the freestyle leg on the victorious 200 medley relay. Calloway won the 100 butterfly. Riffle pulled away in the second half of the race to win the 500 freestyle in 6:46.26. Ochoa fought off a challenge from Valley’s Kendall Craig and Olivia Wilson to win the 100 backstroke.

Molly Vance-Gruss and Calloway joined Bode and Bradley on the medley relay. Melody Hisey and Riffle joined Bode and Bradley on the 200 freestyle relay.

“She had a tough lineup tonight,” Brown said in complimenting Riffle. “Everything was in the second half (of the meet) and pretty close, and she did a pretty good job.”

Valley won five events in the girls meet. Makena Smith was partially or completely responsible for three of them, taking the 200 individual medley in 2:42.63 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:23.46 and also swimming a leg on the meet-closing win in the 400 freestyle relay.

Craig won the 200 freestyle in 2:16.44, beating the field by more than 20 seconds. Ella Myers led a 1-2-3 Valley sweep in the 100 freestyle with Lydia Miller taking second and Katelyn Stump third.

Craig, Olivia Wilson and Woodward joined Smith on the 400 freestyle relay.

Woodward was the only Lady Viking honored on senior night, and her 500 freestyle time was a personal best.

This was Valley’s first meet since the resumption of school after Winter Break.

“We were getting in averaging probably like 6,000 (yards per day),” Bradley said. “So, like between 5,500 and 6,000.”
