The Tippecanoe Valley boys swimming team scored one point and finished in a tie for 48th place at the IHSAA state finals at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis Saturday.

Sophomore Marcus Smith accounted for the point by finishing in 16th place in the 200 individual medley in 1:58.49.

The top 16 in each event score points. It is unclear when Valley last scored at the state finals.

Smith reached the finals by qualifying 16th in 1:55.84 at Friday’s preliminaries.

Smith swam a 1:57.86 at the Warsaw sectional preliminaries to reach the finals on Feb. 16. He then swam a 2:01.63 to win the sectional title on Feb. 18 and qualify for state.

Smith was the only one of Valley’s five state entries to finish in the top 16 at the preliminaries and make it back for the second day of the state finals.

Smith also placed 21st in the 100 backstroke in 52.74 seconds. He swam a 52.39 to win the Warsaw sectional.

Sophomore Isaac Whetstone placed 30th in the 500 freestyle in 5:01.04 at Friday’s preliminaries. He swam 4:53.26 in winning the Warsaw sectional.

Both Valley’s 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams finished 20th. In both relays, Carson Parker and Karl Parker joined Smith and Whetstone.

The 200 medley relay swam a 1:37.22, a 0.49-second improvement on their sectional time. The 200 freestyle relay team swam a 1:28.56, which was 0.26 seconds slower than their sectional time.

Carmel won their ninth consecutive state title with 363 points.
