Tippecanoe Valley senior Marcus Smith finished sixth in the 100 backstroke and 10th in the 100 butterfly at the IHSAA state finals at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis Saturday.

Meanwhile, senior Isaac Whetstone placed 13th in the 100 freestyle.

Smith swam in the backstroke state final and finished in 50.56 seconds, exactly one second slower than his preliminary time from Friday. Bloomington South’s David Kovacs won the title in 47.63 seconds.

Smith was seeded seventh in the event coming into state after winning the Warsaw sectional in 50.44 seconds Feb. 22.

Smith also swam the 100 butterfly in 50.44 seconds one day after swimming a 50.43 in the preliminaries. He was seeded 14th coming into state after winning the sectional in 50.65 seconds.

He is the school record holder in both events.

Whetstone swam the 100 free in 46.73 seconds one day after swimming a 46.45 in the prelims. He was 27th at the 2024 state finals in this event in 48.09.

Whetstone was the No. 11 seed at state after winning the Warsaw sectional in 46.22 seconds.

Whetstone did not advance out of the prelims in the 200 freestyle. He placed 25th in 1:46.23 on Friday. 

He was 28th at state last year in 1:47.95.

Whetstone’s winning time at the Warsaw sectional was 1:43.58, which made him the No. 20 seed.

Valley scored 24 points and finished in 18th place. 

Carmel won their 11th consecutive state title with 412.5 points. They scored more points than runner-up Fishers and third-place Bloomington South combined.
