Smith’s 20 leads Caston past South Newton and into sectional semis

Spin adds 14, Rudicel 13 for Comets

Boys basketball

Caston 53, South Newton 43 (Tuesday): Sam Smith scored a game-high 20 points to lead three players in double figures as the Comets beat South Newton in a Class 1A, Sectional 50 quarterfinal at Tri-County Tuesday.

Joey Spin added 14 points. He outscored the entire South Newton team 8-6 in the first quarter. Bryce Rudicel added 13, including nine in the third quarter.

Kayden Cruz scored eight of his team-high 19 in the fourth quarter for South Newton (5-15).

This was the teams’ first meeting since January 2015 and their first meeting in a sectional game since 2011.

Caston has won the last three sectional meetings against the Rebels. South Newton has not beaten Caston in a sectional game since 2006.

Caston will play Tri-County in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday. Caston beat Tri-County 58-41 in last year’s sectional semifinals.

Caston 57, North Miami 23 (JV, Thursday): Cain Schanlaub scored 18 points, and Garrison Hickle added 16 for the Caston JV (8-11) in a season-ending road win over North Miami Thursday. Colby Pugh had eight, and Talon Zeider chipped in with six.

Middle school girls basketball

Caston 27, Culver “B” 14 (6th grade, Saturday)

Caston 32, Culver “A” 19 (6th grade, Saturday)

Jada Martz scored 12 points to lead the Caston sixth grade girls basketball team past the Culver “B” team in the Hoosier North tournament Saturday. Ariyana Kahlmorgan and Keira Kahlmorgan added four points each, Madi Douglass had three, and Savannah Zimmerman had two.

In their first game Saturday, Caston beat the Culver “A” team behind Douglass’ 26 points. Martz had four, and Aubrey Gearhart had two.

North Judson 26, Caston 18 (6th grade, Thursday): Madi Douglass and Jada Martz scored six points each for the Caston sixth-graders in a loss to North Judson Thursday. Aubrey Gearhart had four, and Haley Miller chipped in with two.

Rochester 33, Caston 15 (6th grade, Feb. 23): Jada Martz scored six points for the Lady Comet sixth-graders in a loss to Rochester Feb. 23. Ariyana Kahlmorgan had four, Aubrey Gearhart and Savannah Zimmerman had two each, and Madi Douglass had one.

Aubrey Wilson led Rochester with nine points. Rochester led 12-0 after the first quarter.
