Steininger, Brooks win TRC titles, help Rochester boys finish 2nd in TRC

Haselby finishes top 5 in diving, backstroke as Lady Zs place 5th

Led by sectional champions Wes Steininger and Peyton Brooks, the Rochester boys swimming team scored 243 points and finished second out of six teams at the Three Rivers Conference meet at Maconaquah Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Rochester girls scored 108.5 points and finished fifth out of five teams.

Maconaquah won the boys team title with 378 points and the girls team title with 366 points.

Maconaquah has won nine consecutive boys team titles and eight consecutive girls team titles. This is Maconaquah’s ninth year in the conference.

Steininger won the 200 individual medley in 2:16.23, outdueling Lewis Cass’ Jackson Hedrick to win by 3.58 seconds.

Brooks won the diving title with 315.05 points over 11 dives. Maconaquah’s Brady Dausch scored 302.35 points and took second.

Jake Seuferer finished second in all four of his events – 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.

Tanner Reese, Spencer Backus and Steininger joined him on both relays.

Steininger and Reese finished second and third, respectively, in the 100 butterfly, and Reese also took fourth in the 50 freestyle.

In the girls meet, the highest-finishing Rochester swimmer was freshman Kylie Haselby, who was fifth in both diving and the 100 backstroke.

Rochester counted 39 season-best swims and 15 podium finishes.

The next meet is a boys-only meet against Plymouth on Jan. 30. Girls sectionals begin Feb. 1 at Warsaw.
