Ava Thomas earned medalist honors with a 40 to lead host Rochester to a 194-196 win over Winamac at Round Barn Golf Club at Mill Creek Aug. 19.

Playing the back nine, Payton Moore added a 45, Kat Rensberger had a 50, Avery Brouyette had a 59, and Delaney Barkman had a 60 for Rochester.

Winamac’s Bianca Huizar shot a team-low 44. Keira Bucinski had a 45, Janet Calfee had a 50, Olivia Link had a 57, and Giselle Lowry had a 62.

Thomas did not have a birdie, but she did have five consecutive pars from holes 12-16. She bogeyed No. 17 but came back to par No. 18.

Moore was the only player on either team to par the par-3 10th.

Winamac’s Huizar was the only player to par the par-5 11th. Huizar also had back-to-back pars on Nos. 13-14.

Rochester’s team score was 14 strokes better than their score in a 207-208 loss to Wabash one day earlier, which was also held on the back nine at Round Barn.

Rochester coach Chad Thomas cited the team’s putting in general and Ava Thomas’ putting in particular for the improvement.

“They did a lot better job of getting the ball in the hole around the greens,” coach Thomas said. “Putting was better tonight, and I think a lot of it probably came from short game. Their short games were better.”

Winamac, the defending Hoosier North champion, is “way better” than they were last year, according to coach Scott Roudebush.

Bucinski, Winamac’s No. 1 player, was a regional qualifier last year.

“Keira’s my number one,” Roudebush said. “She’s been my number one for several years. She’s played really well, but Bianca’s come on. … Bianca’s really, really improved this year, and Janet Calfee shot 50 tonight, and she’s been playing pretty good. We’ve just got to put it all together on the same night.”
