Valley finishes 8th at Peru sectional, advances 5 to regional

Boys wrestling

The Tippecanoe Valley boys wrestling team scored 87 points and finished eighth out of 10 teams at the Peru sectional Saturday.

Though they had no individual sectional champions, five Valley wrestlers advanced to the regional by finishing in the top four in their weight class.

Those advancing include Colton Crabb, who took second at 175; Remington Rickel, who was third at 150; Diego Gonsalez, who was third at 190; Kodiak Hillen, who was fourth at 120; and Thad Shambaugh, who was fourth at 138.

Hillen, Rickel and Crabb also qualified for last year’s regional.

Valley forfeited 106, 113 and heavyweight.

Valley will return to Peru for the regional at 9:30 a.m. this Saturday.

North Miami won their second consecutive sectional title with 239.5 points. Maconaquah, the Three Rivers Conference champions, was 60 points behind and finished second.

Crabb, the No. 2 seed, pinned Lewis Cass’ Brecken Smith in 1:09 in the first round and advanced to the final with a 4-1 win over Huntington North’s Christian Jemison. He then lost by fall in 3:09 to North Miami’s Jordan Simon in the final.
