Valley girls tennis, boys golf briefs: Costello, Neese fall to Wawasee duo in doubles regional

Girls tennis

Costello-Neese fall to Wawasee duo: Tippecanoe Valley’s Mackenzie Costello and Kaitlin Neese lost to Wawasee’s Tate Cowan and Abby Morehead 7-5, 6-2 in a doubles state tournament match at Plymouth May 25.

The loss ended Costello and Neese’s seven-match winning streak. The duo finished the season 12-6.

“The loss doesn’t in any way dampen the season the seniors had while playing high-quality tennis and excelling in the classroom,” Valley coach Andrew Luce said in a statement. “The pair will be missed at Valley in so many ways as they prepare to graduate.”

Columbia City 3, Tippecanoe Valley 2: Hannah Engstrand rallied from a set down to win at No. 2 singles, and Mackenzie Costello and Kaitlin Neese won in straight sets at No. 1 doubles, but Valley lost to host Columbia City in the sectional semifinals on May 20.

Hannah Parson lost in straight sets at No. 1 singles, Peyton Oldham lost in straight sets at No. 3 singles, and Jada Hicks and Andie Schwenger lost in straight sets at No. 2 doubles.

As a No. 1 doubles team that is undefeated in the state tournament, Costello and Neese continued on in the state tournament. Costello and Neese have won seven consecutive matches. They improved to 12-5.

Valley finished the season 8-9.

RESULTS: COLUMBIA CITY 3, TIPPECANOE VALLEY 2

Singles

Hannah Parson (TV) lost 6-3, 6-2.

Hannah Engstrand (TV) won 1-6, 6-1, 6-2

Peyton Oldham (TV) lost 6-0, 6-2

Mackenzie Costello-Kaitlin Neese (TV) won 6-3, 6-2.

Jada Hicks-Andie Schwenger (TV) lost 6-0, 6-4.

Northfield 3, Tippecanoe Valley 2: Hannah Engstrand won in a third-set tiebreak at No. 2 singles, and Mackenzie Costello and Kaitlin Neese won in straight sets at No. 1 doubles, but the Lady Vikings dropped a TRC home match to Northfield in their regular season finale May 17.

Engstrand won 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3).

Hannah Parson and Peyton Oldham lost in straight sets at Nos. 1 and 3 singles, respectively. Jada Hicks and Andie Schwenger lost in straight sets at No. 2 doubles.

Valley finished the regular season 8-9.

Valley won the JV match 2-1.

Maconaquah 4, Tippecanoe Valley 1: Mackenzie Costello and Kaitlin Neese won in a 10-point third set tiebreak, but the Lady Vikings dropped the other four matches in a TRC home loss to Maconaquah May 11.

Hannah Engstrand lost in a third-set 10-point tiebreak to Brooke Borden at No. 2 singles.

Hannah Parson and Peyton Oldham lost in straight sets at Nos. 1 and 3 singles, respectively. Jada Hicks and Andie Schwenger lost in straight sets at No. 2 doubles.

Valley won the JV match 3-1.

Manchester 3, Tippecanoe Valley 2: The Lady Vikings dropped a TRC road match against Manchester May 10 despite winning both doubles matches.

Mackenzie Costello and Kaitlin Neese recovered from dropping the second set 0-6 against Molly Gray and Abbie Wampler to win 7-5 in the third set. Jada Hicks and Andie Schwenger won in a third-set 10-point tiebreak at No. 2 doubles.

Hannah Parson, Hannah Engstrand and Peyton Oldham all lost in straight sets in singles. They won three games combined.

Valley also won the JV match 4-1.

Hannah Parson, Hannah Engstrand and Peyton Oldham lost at singles. The doubles teams of Mackenzie Costello and Kaitlin Neese lost at No. 1 doubles, and Jada Hicks and Andie Schwenger lost at No. 2 doubles.

Only Hicks and Schwenger won a set. They took the second set against Hailey Harness and Grace Rice but dropped the third set 6-4.

John Glenn also won the JV match 2-1. Talia Holder and Lydia Miller won at doubles for Valley.

Mackenzie Costello and Kaitlin Neese won 6-4, 6-2 over Annie Cole and Nici Gunderman at No. 1 doubles, and Jada Hicks and Andie Schwenger won 6-2, 6-0 over Alexa Johnson and Maddie Von Uhl at No. 2 doubles.

Peyton Oldham lost in a 10-point tiebreak against Talia Carrillo after they split the first two sets at No. 3 singles.

Also, Talia Holder and Lydia Miller won a varsity doubles match 6-1, 6-1 over Maria Quiros and Lyndzy Silvers of Southwood.

Valley wins Wabash Invite: The Valley girls tennis went 3-0 to win the Wabash Invitational May 1. They defeated Taylor 5-0, Wabash 4-1 and Whitko 3-2.

Hannah Parson went 3-0 at No. 1 singles, and Hannah Engstrand went 3-0 at No. 2 singles. Engstrand trailed by a set in two of her three match wins and had to win a 10-point tiebreak to win the match.

Mackenzie Costello and Kaitlin Neese went 2-0 at No. 1 doubles.

Bri Feldman and Kaydence Shepherd split time at No. 2 doubles with Jada Hicks and Andie Schwenger. Feldman and Shepherd lost their match against Abby Arter and Morgan Dyer of Whitko while Hicks and Schwenger beat Alexa Johnson and Maddie Von Uhl of Wabash.

Boys golf

Northfield 189, Tippecanoe Valley 199, Wabash 203: Led by Greg Miller’s 43, Valley finished second in a three-way match against Northfield and Wabash at Honeywell Golf Course in Wabash May 18.

Mason Purvis added a 50, Branson McBrier and Eli Love each had 53s, and Grady McGriff had a 55.

Northfield’s Toby Baer was the medalist with a 41.

Brandon Hoffman led the Valley JV with a 56. Johnny Gonsalez had a 57, Kolyn Grossman had a 62, and Gavin Grossman had a 67.

Valley takes 7th at TRC tournament: The Valley boys golf team placed seventh out of 10 teams at the TRC tournament at Rozella Ford Golf Club in Warsaw May 15.

Greg Miller led Valley withy a 76 to finish sixth overall and make the all-conference team.

Other Valley scores included Mason Purvis’ 106, Grady McGrIff’s 106, Branson McBrier’s 108, and Eli Love’s 112.

Middle school golf

Parker takes medalist at Valley Invite; team takes 2nd: Led by medalist Wes Parker’s 40, the TVMS Gold boys golf team shot a 178 and finished second out of 11 teams at the Tippecanoe Valley Invitational at The Waldo Golf Course in Roann May 17.

Meanwhile, the TVMS Green team shot a 222 and finished ninth.

Other Gold team scores included Ethan Young’s 44, Landon Patrick’s 47, Evan Bolinger’s 47, and Ian Cooksey’s 53.

Green team scores included Khristian Sebastian’s 53, Parker Newcomer’s 55, William Mellott’s 56, Nash Bouse’s 58 and John Hill’s 61.

Rochester shot a 193 and finished fourth. Olivia Bailey had a 44, Ava Thomas had a 45, Mason Conrad had a 48, Ben Gentry had a 56, and Ashton Musselman had a 59.

Caston shot a 262 and finished 11th. Gage Thomas had a 56, Luke Hipsher had a 66, and Shaylee Strasser and Jaime Prater each shot a 70.

Warsaw Edgewood won with a 178. They beat the Vikings on the fifth player’s score tiebreaker for the title.
