Valley’s Miller captures New Haven AA title in 19:28

Steininger runs 17:36, helps Rochester boys place 14th

Chesnee Miller

Tippecanoe Valley senior Chesnee Miller won the New Haven Class AA girls individual title at Huntington University Saturday, traversing the course in 19:28 to top a field of 142 runners.

Miller beat runner-up Olivia Howell of Eastbrook by 7.2 seconds. Miller was one of five runners who broke 20 minutes.

Valley scored 260 points and finished 11th out of 16 teams. The other RTC area team to compete in the race was Rochester, who had an incomplete team.

Other Valley girls runners included Bailey Bussard, who was 32nd in 22:54; McKenna Lowe, who was 45th in 23:26; Ava Minix, who was 106th in 27:09; and Sienna Holder, who was 142nd in 38:58.

Rochester had three runners, all sophomores. Allyson Calloway broke 22 minutes for the third consecutive race and finished 20th in 21:53. Kaydence Bradley was 94th in 25:59, and Brooklyn Chandler was 97th in 26:26.

Hamilton Heights won the team title with 57 points. Norwell was second with 102.

In the boys Class AA race, Rochester was 14th out of 20 complete teams with 329 points, and Valley was 20th with 489 points.

Wes Steininger

The top Rochester finisher was Wes Steininger, who was 19th in a field of 159 runners in 17:36. Reece Johnson was 40th in 18:19, Lane Shank was 82nd in 19:40, Hayden Shuck was 91st in 20:00, and Leandro Javier was 116th in 20:59.

Valley’s frontrunner was sophomore Christopher Marquez, who took 61st in 18:57. Other Valley finishers included Eli Sterk, who was 105th in 20:34; Isaac Whetstone, who was 118th in 21:06; Luis Nuñez, who was 128th in 21:35; Joseph Lybarger, who was 142nd in 23:21; Keagan Tignor, who was 148th in 24:06; and Michael Leininger, who was 154th in 25:23.

South Bend Riley won the team title with 142 points, 12 fewer than runner-up West Noble. LaPel’s Cameron Smith was the individual champion in 16:18.

Huntington University hosted the meet. New Haven will also host the IHSAA regional at The Plex on Oct. 21.
