Boys soccer
Valley finishes 2nd at Winamac Invite (Saturday): The Valley boys soccer team finished second out of four teams at the Winamac Invitational Saturday. Valley edged Winamac 1-0 in the first round before falling to Class 1A, No. 10 North White 7-0 in the championship game.
Christian Ramirez scored the only goal of the game in the win over Winamac.
“The Vikings, playing without the services of defensive specialist Arturo Dominguez and midfielder Jon Ruiz, relied on their youth to propel them into their first ever soccer championship game in school history,” coach Andrew Luce said in a statement. “Both teams went back and forth for much of the contest without either team really gaining a strong foothold.”
Tyler Jones had the shutout in goal. Luce also praised defenders David Reyes, Gio Arriaga, Jesus Baca and Gerardo Fernandez.
In the championship game, North White jumped out to a 7-0 halftime lead and cruised to the win.
“Valley played tough but quickly realized they were in for a difficult match,” Luce said. “North White scored early and often on the weary Vikings and walked away with the championship trophy.”
Valley 3, Lakeland Christian 3 (Thursday): Jon Ruiz, Christian Ramirez and Caleb Petgen scored goals for Valley as they rallied from a 3-0 deficit to earn a draw with Class 1A, No. 19 Lakeland Christian Thursday.
Valley defender Arturo Dominguez missed the game due to an ankle injury.
Lakeland Christian led 2-0 at halftime.
Elkhart Christian 4, Valley 1 (Tuesday): Christian Ramirez scored the lone Valley goal in a home loss to Elkhart Christian Tuesday.
Valley honored Kaitlin Neese, Arturo Dominguez and Luis Castillo on senior night.
“The size and strength advantage Elkhart had over the Vikings wore down the home team as the game unfolded,” Valley coach Andrew Luce said in a statement. “The majority of the contest took part on Valley’s defensive side of the field. Keeper Tyler Jones did a great job making plenty of saves, and Dominguez played his usual strong defensive game turning away opportunity and after opportunity the Eagles had.”
Valley 8, Peru 0 (Sept. 17): Caleb Petgen had his second hat trick of the season, and Christian Ramirez, Gio Arriaga, Luis Castillo, Gerardo Fernandez and Jon Ruiz each added a goal for Valley in a TRC home win over Peru Sept. 17.
“However, it was the Vikings defense that shined tonight,” Valley coach Andrew Luce said in a statement. “Arturo Dominguez, David Reyes and Jesus Baca all played solid games and turned away any Peru threats along with (goalkeeper Tyler) Jones.”
Culver 3, Valley 1 (Sept. 14): Christian Ramirez scored the lone Valley goal in a road loss to Culver Sept. 14.
Shane Stevens, Joey Pizur and Damien Byers scored in the second half as Culver overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit. Ethan Keller contributed an assist.
“The second half was nip and tuck until about the 25-minute mark,” Valley coach Andrew Luce said in a statement. “Again, Valley missed a couple of shots on goal that could have put them up by two or even three goals but couldn’t cash in.”
