Valley sports briefs: Wagner, Mellott named first-team all-TRC

Leasure, Perkins combine for 37, but Valley falls to Wawasee

Girls basketball

Tippecanoe Valley senior guard Sidney Wagner and sophomore guard-forward Kaydence Mellott were selected first-team all-Three Rivers Conference in voting done by the conference’s coaches and released to the media.

In addition, senior post player Hayley Backus was named honorable mention.

Wagner led Valley in scoring (19.6 ppg), rebounding (7.7 rpg), assists (5 apg) and steals (4.5 spg). She finished her career with 1,007 career points.

Mellott made 66 3-pointers at a 45 percent rate. She also shot 76 percent from the foul line and averaged 13.7 ppg.

Backus averaged 7 ppg and 4.9 rpg despite being limited to 11 games played due to a right knee ACL tear.

Boys basketball

Wawasee 58, Tippecanoe Valley 51 (Tuesday): Paul Leasure hit five 3-pointers and scored 22 points, and Dawson Perkins added 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds for Valley in a home loss to Wawasee Tuesday.

Keaton Dukes had 27 points, and Caden Welty had 10 for Wawasee. Duked also had nine rebounds.

Valley committed 19 turnovers.

Valley led 26-21 at halftime before Wawasee outscored them 16-2 in the third quarter.

The teams will meet again at 7 p.m. Tuesday at West Noble in a Class 3A, Sectional 21 quarterfinal.

In the JV game, the Vikings prevailed 47-21 behind Cooper Walls’ 15 points, five assists and three steals. Riley Shepherd had 14 points and five rebounds. Landon Walters had five points and four assists.

The Valley JV finished 16-6.

Middle school girls basketball

Mackaylie Costello scored 10 points to lead the TVMS eighth-graders to a win over Wabash in the first round of the Running Rivers Conference tournament Feb. 22. Lydia Craig had nine, Bailey Bussard had six, Carlee Snyder had four, Avery Wagoner had four, Emma Patrick had two, and Maddie Thompson had two.

In the seventh-grade game, TVMS won behind Maci Parker’s 10 points and 14 rebounds. Gaby Gonzalez had nine, Betty Shepherd had four, and Dalynne Bussard had two.

Gonzalez also had six rebounds and 10 steals. Shepherd also had four steals. Bussard also had eight rebounds and six steals. Lindsey Petersen had two rebounds. Karley Hallstrom had two rebounds and two steals.

Middle school wrestling

Wagoner, Crabb star vs. Triton, Winamac: Adin Wagoner had four wins for the TVMS wrestling team as part of a three-way dual against Triton and Winamac.

Colton Crabb added three wins, and Jaxtyn Virgil, Thad Shambaugh, Denver Wilson, Brock Derf and Parker Adamson had two wins each.

Remington Rickel and Jordan Lybarger had one win each.
