Weaver leads Valley girls golf past Bremen, Triton

Sports Editor, RTC

Madelyn Weaver fired a 50 to help lead the Tippecanoe Valley girls golf team to a win in a three-way match over visiting Bremen and Triton at Round Barn Golf Club at Mill Creek Wednesday.

Valley fired a 214, Bremen had a 223, and Triton had an incomplete team.

Kaydence Mellott added a 52 for Valley; Lily Ault, Cheney Canada and Lydia Miller each shot a 56; and Molly Moriarty had a 58.

Valley was coming off a sixth-place finish at the 14-team Rochester Invitational on Saturday.

“I would just say (they are) moderately experienced,” Valley coach Thadd Mellott said of his players. “Madelyn Weaver plays a lot of summer golf. She’s by far the most experienced, and to be quite honest, the rest of our girls, they play other sports. They try to get in as much golf as they can during the summer. This past summer, obviously with the COVID, the Marshall County Junior Tour got canceled. Most of the Little City Tour got canceled, but there were some larger events that Madelyn went to that are obviously helping her at this point.”

Weaver has few weaknesses, according to Mellott.

“She’s solid at everything,” coach Mellott said. “At this point being a sophomore, she has some really good spots and then some stuff that she still, I think, admittedly needs to work on. Over the summer, I’ve seen her shoot some really low rounds. And so far this season, she’s had some really low rounds and then some rounds that she’s probably not really happy with. I think that’s just inexperience, just the youth.”
