LOGANSPORT — Ava Thomas went three days without playing golf, but that could not keep the Rochester junior from winning medalist honors against host Logansport at Dykeman Park Golf Course Tuesday.

Thomas shot a 38, and Rochester went on to beat the sectional rival Lady Berries 186-192.

Olivia Bailey added a 39, Payton Moore had a 49, Laynie Migonis had a 60, and Ella McCarter had a 67.

Freshman Lexi Haughs, who had been the Lady Zs’ No. 4 player in all of their previous matches, missed the match due to illness.

Rochester trailed by one stroke with the final group still out on the course. They needed Migonis to shoot a 65 or better to have a chance to win. Once she reported a 60, Logansport needed a 48 or better from their No. 5 Kate Barber, but when Barber reported a 54, Rochester had the win.

“Lexi was sick today, so Laynie stepping up and filling that number five spot for us was huge,” Rochester coach Chad Thomas said. “I thought she did a really good job handling it out there. She’s learning, and she’s getting better, so that’s good for her to see that hey, even though I’ve been number six here lately, she came in and helped the team out.”

Thomas said she went to Ohio for a family vacation for three days over the Labor Day weekend.

“I think it went pretty well considering I haven’t played for three days,” Thomas said. “I was worried my swing was getting rusty. It really hadn’t. My driver’s swing was a little off, but irons were fine.”

McCarter and Migonis had never played competitive golf prior to this high school season. Thomas said that McCarter might ask how Thomas turns the club face in order to get the ball to hook.

She said there is an air of mutual respect, especially given McCarter’s prowess in other sports.

“Everyone on the team knows that golf can be really hard, but I know that Ella is way better at basketball than I ever was,” a smiling Thomas said. “She finds that much easier than I would.”

Rochester has lost only to Warsaw in a nine-hole match. That occurred at Round Barn Golf Club at Mill Creek on Aug. 9.
