Week 8 football roundup: Moriarty’s big first quarter helps Valley rout John Glenn

Judson shuts out Caston; Pioneer records 4th shutout vs. Triton; Culver blanked at NM; Wolford, Adriano go over 100 yards rushing as Winamac handles S. Central

Tippecanoe Valley 42, John Glenn 7 (Friday): Grady Moriarty threw a touchdown pass and ran for a touchdown in the first quarter, and Owen Omondi had a 62-yard touchdown run in the second quarter as Valley rolled to an Indiana Northern State Conference road win Friday.

Wes Parker, Diego Gonsalez and Hunter Stage also had scoring runs.

Jamison Phillips caught the touchdown pass from Moriarty, a 55-yarder that opened the scoring. Stage also had 65 yards passing. The 120 passing yards for the team were a season-high.

Valley also had a 263-108 advantage in rushing yards.

Omondi had 98 yards rushing on just three carries, Moriarty had 59 yards, Parker had 36 yards, and Stage had 33 yards.

Phillips had 60 yards receiving, Omondi had 49, and Parker had 11.

Hudson Shepherd and Omondi each had interceptions on defense.

John Glenn had four turnovers.

Valley led 42-0 at halftime.

Valley beat John Glenn for the third straight year.

Valley moved up from No. 12 to No. 10 in this week’s Class 3A USA Today media poll.

North Judson 35, Caston 0 (Friday): Ashton Bowyer had 20 carries for 83 yards, but host Caston lost to Class 1A, No. 3 North Judson at the Comet Crater Friday.

Reed Sommers added six carries for 32 yards and two receptions for 12 yards, and he also tied for the team lead in tackles with four. Gavin Mollenkopf had 31 yards passing and 18 yards rushing.

Logan Mollenkopf had a team-high four receptions and also had four tackles on defense. Tucker Woolever and Parker Zimpleman had four tackles each.

Bowyer, London Herd and Jake Farrer had three tackles each. Brayden Unger had two tackles and a blocked kick.

North Judson led 20-0 at halftime.

Caston dropped to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in the Hoosier North. North Judson is 7-1, 6-0.

Pioneer 42, Triton 0 (Friday): Noah VanMeter ran for 170 yards and three touchdowns, and the Class 1A, No. 8 Pioneer defense recorded their fourth shutout of the season in a rout of Triton Friday.

Pioneer beat Triton for the first time since 2021 despite not completing a pass.

Micah Rans ran for 63 yards and two touchdowns on six carries, and Phillip McFatridge ran for 75 yards and a touchdown. Shiloh Rine had five carries for 41 yards. Colten Long had two carries for 20 yards.

As a team, Pioneer ran for 363 yards on 8.4 yards per carry.

J.J. Solano led the defense with seven tackles, and Rine had five. McFatridge and Cole Franklin had four tackles each. Long and Kit Gotshall had three tackles each.

Pioneer held Triton to 154 yards of offense. The Trojans completed just three of 13 passes.

Triton also committed three turnovers.

Pioneer led 35-0 at halftime.

Pioneer will travel to North Judson for the conference title this Friday. Pioneer is No. 8 in this week’s USA Today media poll while North Judson is No. 2. Both teams are 7-1, 6-0.

Winamac 38, South Central (Union Mills) 16 (Friday): Tearson Wolford ran for 153 yards and a touchdown, and he also had 14 tackles on defense as the visiting Warriors beat winless South Central Friday.

Xavier Adriano passed for 114 yards and a touchdown and also ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Adriano also had five tackles.

Ethan Burgess scored two touchdowns – one rushing, one receiving – and accounted for 145 total yards, including an 80-yard touchdown catch from Adriano in the third quarter.

Ivan Cardenas also had a 21-yard touchdown run. Michael Shidler had 37 yards rushing on six carries.

Winamac led 25-10 at halftime. 

Winamac improved to 2-6, 2-4 Hoosier North. South Central is 0-8, 0-6.

Winamac has not lost to South Central since the 2010 sectional.

North Miami 37, Culver 0 (Friday): Ryan Meredith ran for 133 yards and a touchdown for North Miami in the home win over Culver Friday.

Lake Musall, Hartley Hoover, Braylon McIntire and Cooper Pattison also ran for touchdowns.

Culver dropped to 2-6, 1-5 Hoosier North. They have been shut out in three of their last four games.

North Miami led 22-0 at halftime.
