The Winamac girls placed three runners in the top seven in a field of 81 runners and went on to win the Caston Invitational title Saturday.

Winamac had 51 points to top the field of 11 teams. South Bend Adams was second with 68. The top area runner was Pioneer sophomore Violet Montgomery, who ran a 20:19 to win the individual title and help the Lady Panthers finish seventh with 151 points.

Caston was eighth with 157, and Argos and Culver had incomplete teams.

Winamac’s frontrunner was sophomore Maggie Smith, who took fourth in 20:32. Other Winamac finishers included Kadence Hoover, who was fifth in 20:39; Kelsey Wegner, who was seventh in 21:06; Alexis Sheets, who was 14th in 22:33; Rori Blackman, who was 28th in 23:53; and Kingsley Kroft, who was 43rd in 25:00.

Bethany Poor was third in 24:04, and Ariana Gualajara was seventh in 25:53 in the JV girls race.

Pioneer’s second-fastest runner behind Montgomery was senior Kylie Farris, who was 12th in 22:26.

Caston had two runners finishing in the top 25: Delaney Strasser ran a 22:43 and finished 16th, and Mackenzi Roudebush ran a 23:44 and finished 25th.

“I expect our course to provide quick times, and this was year was no different with all the girls running around 30 seconds faster per mile than they did the past two races at Logansport, and every lady setting either a season-best or career-best effort today,” Caston coach Blair Zimmerman said in a statement.

Rose Peterson, Culver’s lone runner, was 22nd in 23:24. Argos freshman Savannah Lyon was 34th in 24:21.

In the boys race, South Bend Adams won with 38 points to top a field of 14 teams. Among RTC area teams, Pioneer was fourth with 118 points, Winamac was seventh with 175 points, Caston was ninth with 228 points, and Argos and Culver had incomplete teams.

Three area boys runners finished in the top 10: Caston junior Austin Dague was fourth in 17:18, Pioneer sophomore Jackson Baker was fifth in 17:20, and Winamac junior Kolbey Wegner was seventh in 17:34.

Besides Baker, other scoring Pioneer runners included Leighton Dodt, who was 15th in 18:16; Carson Meyer, who was 17th in 18:24; Jack Cooper, who was 26th in 18:44; Austin Brooke, who was 60th in 21:01; Brandon Cearing, who was 65th in 21:16; and Ryan Adams, who was 72nd in 21:52.

Caston runners Brady Evans (20:32), Alex Craig (22:29) and Max Sommers (23:36) all set personal bests.

“I was really pleased to see the guys take advantage of our home course to shave substantial amounts of time from their past couple of meets,” Zimmerman said. “It’s always awesome to plug results in and see the runners setting new personal bests. I’m looking forward to seeing the guys push themselves and continue that trend.”

Culver’s two runners both set personal bests. Aleks Stacy ran a 21:48 to finish 71st, and Quaid Primm ran a 24:32 to finish 94th.

Argos’ Nudtanum Sangchaitawee was 92nd in 24:21.
