Winamac’s Fredel runs away from Bowditch to win Caston Invite; Rochester’s Calloway takes 2nd in girls race

FULTON — Winamac senior Logan Fredel won the Caston Invitational in 16:42 Saturday and helped the Warriors finish fourth among 11 complete teams in the boys race.

Winamac scored 103 points. In a tight finish, Tri-County won with 85 points. Delphi also scored 85 points, but Tri-County won on the sixth-runners-time tiebreaker as they had a sixth runner and Delphi did not. Lewis Cass scored 86 points and finished third.

Among other area teams, Caston was fifth with 119 points, Pioneer was seventh with 160 points, and Rochester and Argos had incomplete teams.

In the girls race, the top area team was Caston, who took fourth out of 10 complete teams with 131 points. Winamac was fifth with 142, Rochester was sixth with 147, and Pioneer was ninth with 213. Argos and Culver had incomplete teams.

Led by individual champion Aftin Griffin, Lewis Cass won the team title with 44 points. Griffin’s time of 19:20 was 57 seconds faster than runner-up Allyson Calloway of Rochester. Calloway, a senior, ran a personal best 20:17 and finished 43 seconds faster than Lewis Cass’ Hope Rush, who was third.

Rochester

Calloway essentially ran alone for much of the race, quickly locking up second place. Other Rochester girls runners included Brooklyn Chandler, who was 28th in 23:52; Kadence Bradley, who was 42nd in 24:56; Adison Hayes, who was 44th in 25:01; Trinity Baine, who was 46th in 25:32; Ainsley Horvath, who was 76th in 32:04 and Jocelynn Shafer, who was 77th in 32:06.

Rochester’s boys team consisted of four runners – junior Leandro Javier and three freshmen. Javier was 20th and earned a ribbon after finishing in 19:00. As for the freshmen, Caden Biernacki was 36th in 20:06, Tyson Wachtmann was 39th in 20:15, and Lucas Scorsone was 61st in 21:57.

Caston

Sophomore Hannah Rogers, an individual regional qualifier last year, was Caston’s girls frontrunner in 22:56. She finished 12th to earn a ribbon. Other Lady Comet runners included Camila Hernandez-Rios, who was 24th in 23:34; Mylie Rude, who was right behind Hernandez-Rios in 25th in 23:39; Alexa Lowe, who was 34th in 24:26; Jaded Aguilar, who was 45th in 25:20; and Trinity Zimmerman, who was 52nd in 26:06.

Senior Kane Finke earned a ribbon in the boys race by finishing 10th in 18:12. Daulton Oaf was 22nd in 19:04, Malakai Clayton was 25th in 19:18; Andrew Douglass was 41st in 20:19, Isaac Albright was 43rd in 20:30; Jack Brumett was 47th in 20:54, and Reuben Helt was 52nd in 21:18.

Winamac

Avery Wegner was Winamac’s frontrunner in the girls race, falling behind Griffin, Calloway and Rush but outlasting Triton’s McKenna Emenaker to finish fourth in 21:19. Fellow senior Kandace Kroft also claimed a ribbon by finishing eighth in 22:23, Madelyn Goodman was 30th in 24:09, Roni Garbison was 58th in 27:04, and Brooklyn Jachim was 71st in 30:26.

In the boys race, Fredel and Bowditch separated themselves from a field of 88 runners. With a mile to go, Fredel made his move and beat Bowditch by 15 seconds, 16:42 to 16:57. Fredel and Bowditch will compete against each other again at the Maconaquah Invitational this Saturday, and they are expected to be two of the top contenders at the Hoosier North meet at Winamac Oct. 4.

Fredel’s fellow senior teammate Nathan Pierzchalski was sixth in 17:22, Paxton Moon was 26th in 19:25, Joel Showley was 40th in 20:17, Braylen Becker was 50th in 21:08, Elisha Burns was 53rd in 21:19, and Austin Pratt was 64th in 22:16.

Pioneer

Pioneer’s girls team consisted of five runners with Avery Haselby leading the way in 29th place in 24:08. Following her home were Ellie Hines, who was 39th in 24:44; Paytyn Dillman, who was 56th in 26:24; Kaydence Cottrell, who was 57th in 26:49; and Zadie Fross, who was 78th in 33:01.

Bowditch’s teammates included Eli Hines, who was 23rd in 19:04; Braylon Jamerson, who was 38th in 20:10; Gabriel Scott, who was 65th in 22:23; Kevin Gluth, who was 74th in 23:20; and Isaac Henry, who was 80th in 24:08.

Argos

Lexi Gibson was the lone Argos girl runner, and she placed 55th out of 83 runners in 26:18.

Freshman Emry Stackhouse was the lone Argos boy, and he was 30th in 19:58.

Culver

Junior Savana Harrington, the only Lady Cavalier, was 64th in 28:36. Culver does not have a boys team.

Middle school

In the girls middle school race, Morgan Township won with 21 points. Pioneer was seventh in the field of 11 complete teams with 187, Rochester was eighth with 193, and Winamac was 11th with 290. Argos, Caston and Culver had incomplete teams.

Brylie Caudle, an eighth-grader from Pioneer, was the fastest area runner, taking fifth in a field of 131 in 12:32.

Morgan Township also won the boys middle school team title, scoring 31 points to beat a field of 14. Rochester was fifth with 128, Pioneer was sixth with 157, Culver was eighth with 269, Winamac was 10th with 297, and Caston was 12th with 314. Argos had an incomplete team.

Rochester’s Warner DuBois, an eighth-grader, was third out of 173 runners in 10:59 and was the top area finisher.
