Winamac sports briefs: Compton scores 20 in Winamac loss to Rensselaer

Smith, Kroft receive IBCA honors

Boys basketball

Rensselaer 65, Winamac 41 (Friday): Russell Compton scored 20 points, but the visiting Warriors lost to sectional rival Rensselaer in their regular season finale Friday.

Beau Brandt added eight points, all in the first half.

Joshua Fleming had 31 points, and Tate Drone added 17 for Rensselaer in the win. Fleming made five of the Bombers’ eight 3-pointers.

Rensselaer led 23-21 at halftime. They outscored Winamac 27-12 in the fourth quarter.

Winamac (6-16) lost to Rensselaer for the fifth straight year. They will carry a three-game losing streak into the postseason.

Girls basketball

Smith, Kroft receive IBCA honors: The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association has named Winamac senior Maggie Smith to its Senior All-State Honorable Mention list.

The IBCA also named Winamac junior guard Kingsley Kroft to its Underclass All-State Honorable Mention list.

Smith was one of 90 players statewide to make the Senior list. Kroft was one of 90 players to make the Underclass list.

Winamac went 11-9 on the season. The season ended with a 51-24 loss to North Judson in a Class 2A, Sectional 34 quarterfinal at North Judson on Feb. 3.
