Winamac sports briefs: Girls cross-country 2nd, boys 7th at Jacob Graf Invite

Huizar, Calfee shoot 39 in girls golf win over North Miami

Cross-country

The Winamac girls cross-country team scored 79 points and finished second out of 10 teams at the Jacob Graf Invitational at Logansport Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Winamac boys scored 187 points and finished seventh out of 11 teams.

In the girls race, Maggie Smith was the Winamac frontrunner, taking 11th in 22:31. Kadence Hoover was 12th in 22:42, and sophomore Kelsey Wegner was 15th in 23:08. Alexis Sheets, who ran a 23:50, took 20th.

Kolbey Wegner was the fastest Warrior in the boys race, taking eighth in 18:26. Cristian Cardenas was 13th in 18:49.

Western won the girls team title with 65 points. Lafayette Jeff won the boys team title with 48 points.

Northwestern’s Hannah Moore won the girls race in 20:24, and Tipton’s Evan Long won the boys race in 17:06.

Girls golf

Culver Academy 160, Logansport 195, Winamac 209 (Tuesday): Keira Bucinski led Winamac with a 47, but the Lady Warriors finished third in a three-way match against No. 12 Culver Academy and Logansport Tuesday.

Janet Calfee added a 52, Bianca Huizar had a 53, Giselle Lowry had a 57, and Olivia Link had a 60.

Bianca Huizar added a 49, Olivia Link and Janet Calfee each had a 56, and Giselle Lowry had a 58.

Volleyball

Winamac goes 0-4 at Tomahawk Invite (Saturday): The Winamac volleyball team went 0-4 and finished in 12th place at the Tomahawk Invitational at North Miami Saturday. They now stands at 2-8 on the season.

Winamac lost to Oak Hill and Wabash in pool play and to Eastbrook and Delphi in the medal round. All four matches went two sets.

Boys soccer

Morgan Township 1, Winamac 0 (Monday): Brayden Cuson scored off a Jaka Jaranowski assist in the second half for the game’s only goal in Morgan Township’s win over visiting Winamac Monday.

Thomas Fierens had two of Winamac’s five shots on goal.

Senior goalkeeper Max Murray had four saves.

Winamac 10, Oregon-Davis 1 (Aug. 19): Andrew Cardenas scored four goals for host Winamac in a season-opening win over Oregon-Davis Aug. 19. Conner Burton and Mitchell Bonnell scored two goals apiece, and Alex Stark and Sawyer DePoy scored once each.

Stark also had three assists, and Truman Johansen and Cristian Cardenas had two assists each. Andrew Cardenas, Eli Wildermuth and DePoy had one assist each.

Max Murray had three saves in goal.

Winamac led 6-1 at halftime.
