Zimpleman scores 24, helps Caston rout West Central

Scales and Douglass add 12; next up: vs. South Newton, 7:30 p.m. Friday

Girls basketball

Caston 62, West Central 37 (Tuesday): Addison Zimpleman hit four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 24 points, and Isabel Scales and Madi Douglass added 12 each for the No. 7 Lady Comets in a rout of West Central in a Class 1A, Sectional 52 quarterfinal at South Newton Tuesday.

Alexa Finke added seven points, a season high.

Annika Smith led the Lady Trojans with 11 points.

Caston improved to 19-3. West Central finished 13-9.

West Central came in having gone 7-1 in their final eight regular season games, but Caston erupted for a 26-8 lead after one quarter and extended the lead to 49-16 at halftime.

Caston had scored 49 points in a game only twice in their last eight regular season games coming in.

Caston will play South Newton in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday. South Newton is 1-16 and has lost nine straight games. They have not won a sectional game since 2019.

In Tuesday’s other quarterfinal, Tri-County held Frontier scoreless in the second half and ran away with a 62-13 win. Tri-County will play North White, who received a bye, in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday.
