Girls: Lady Warriors Wegner, Kroft, Goodman advance to New Prairie

Despite top six finishes from Logan Fredel and Nathan Pierzchalski, the Winamac boys cross-country team was not able to advance to regional from the Rensselaer sectional Saturday.

Fredel, Pierzchalski and Paxton Moon advanced as individuals, but Winamac finished sixth among the 13 teams in the field. Only the top five teams and top 15 individuals on non-advancing teams advanced to the regional at New Prairie at 11:30 a.m. Eastern this Saturday.

Fredel and Pierzchalski are both seniors who went 1-2 at the Hoosier North meet at their course at Winamac Town Park Oct. 4. This time, Fredel was third overall in the field of 87 and first among individuals on non-advancing teams in 17:14 while Pierzchalski was sixth overall and second among individuals in 17:52. Moon, a freshman, ran an 18:54 and finished 29th overall and seventh among individuals.

In the girls meet, Avery Wegner, Kandace Kroft and Madelyn Goodman advanced as individuals, but Winamac had an incomplete team.

Wegner was 14th overall in the field of 70 and fifth among individuals on non-advancing teams in 22:32. Kroft was 17th overall and seventh among individuals in 22:49, and Goodman was 37th overall and 14th among individuals in 24:28.

DeMotte Christian won the boys team title with 41 points, and Kankakee Valley (71), Benton Central (117), Twin Lakes (125) and Rensselaer (134) also advanced. Winamac scored 153 points.

Kankakee Valley’s Matthew Hoffman was the individual champion in 16:38.

Led by sophomore Jenna Walker’s 18:12, Kankakee Valley had the three fastest girls in the field of 70 and won the team title with 20 points. Tri-County (70), West Central (81), Rensselaer (103) and South Newton (136) also advanced to New Prairie.

Every boy who ran a 19:31 and every girl who ran a 24:29 advanced.
