Boys basketball

Elkhart Christian 65, Argos 50 (Feb. 23): Sean Richard scored 22 points, and Luke Stults added 13, but the Argos boys basketball team lost its regular season finale to host Elkhart Christian on Feb. 23.

Kenyan Beldon hit a pair of 3-pointers for six, and Hayden Hensler also had six.

Aiden Hibbard had 29 for Elkhart Christian. 

Elkhart Christian hit seven 3-pointers while Argos hit two.

Elkhart Christian led 25-13 after one quarter.

Argos finished Hoosier Plains play 3-2 and in third place. Bethany Christian won the conference with a 5-0 mark.

Elkhart Christian went on to win Class 1A sectional and regional titles.

In the JV game, Argos prevailed 42-35. Preston Mollette and Mack Calhoun had 10 points each, and Nick Grove and Kyle Penn had nine each for Argos. Gabe McMillen and Sawyer Crace had two each.

Argos 55, North Newton 49 (Feb. 17): Sean Richard scored 24 points, and Argos held off an Evan Gagnon scoring spree in the second half to earn a home win at Phil Weybright Gymnasium on Feb. 17.

Luke Stults added 14, and Zhayne Hellums scored 12 on four 3-pointers.

Gagnon had 23 of his 31 in the second half for the Spartans. Gagnon finished seventh in the state with a 24.9 scoring average.

Argos led 25-16 at halftime before North Newton cut the deficit to 37-33 after three quarters.

Argos is 4-4 against Class 2A opponents.

North Newton took the JV game 59-44. Obediah Salary scored 16 points, and Nick Grove added 12 for Argos. Preston Mollette added nine, Mack Calhoun had four, and Sawyer Crace had three.

Argos 66, South Central (Union Mills) 62 (OT, Feb. 13): Sean Richard scored a game-high 26 points, and Luke Stults tossed in 25 for Argos on a home overtime win over South Central on Feb. 13.

Zhayne Hellums added 11, including six in the overtime.

South Central senior Derek Welsh had a team-high 25.

South Central led 25-22 at halftime and 40-37 after three quarters. The game was tied at 54 at the end of regulation.

Richard and Stults combined for 14 of Argos’ 17 points in the fourth quarter. Hellums hit two 3-pointers – one in the fourth quarter and one in overtime.

Argos is 3-3 in overtime games during the Jason Breden era.

Clinton Christian is a non-IHSAA private school located in Goshen.

Argos also routed Clinton Christian 41-8 in the JV game. Nick Grove scored 14 points, Preston Mollette had 10, Obediah Salary had seven, Gabe McMillen had six, and Mack Calhoun had four.

Caston 45, Argos 44 (Feb. 6): Sean Richard scored eight of his 27 points in the fourth quarter, but the Dragons lost to visiting Caston at Phil Weybright Gymnasium on Feb. 6.

Luke Stults added 10.

Caleb Stinson scored 15 points, and Talon Zeider added 10 for Caston, who beat Argos for the first time since Feb. 6, 2015.

Caston led 40-32 after three quarters before holding off an Argos rally.

Argos made more free throws (11) than Caston attempted (six).

Caston also won the JV game 63-31. Drew McGrew and Josh Evans scored 14 points each for Caston.

Hayden Hensler added five, and Kenyan Beldon had three.

Richard also had a team-high four assists and four steals.

Triton 59, Argos 45 (Feb. 1): Sean Richard scored 18 points, and Luke Stults added 16, but the visiting Dragons lost to sectional rival Triton at the Trojan Trench on Feb. 1.

Gage Riffle nailed seven 3-pointers and scored 25 points for Triton. Julian Swanson added 11, all in the second half.

Argos lost despite making more free throws (11) than Triton attempted (two).

Argos led 24-23 at halftime, but Triton came back to lead 43-36 after three quarters.

Churubusco 54, Argos 44 (Jan. 27): Sean Richard scored 22 points, and Luke Stults added 10, but the visiting Eagles snapped a nine-game losing streak with a win over Argos at Phil Weybright Gymnasium on Jan. 27.

Churubusco jumped out to a 22-15 lead after one quarter thanks to four 3-pointers from Caden Ummel, who led the Eagles with 17 points.

Argos lost despite making more free throws (10) than Churubusco attempted (eight).

In the JV game, Churubusco won 44-28 despite Kyle Penn’s nine points. Preston Mollette added eight, Gabe McMillen had five, and Obediah Salary, Enkhorgil Batocher and Mack Calhoun had two each.

Argos 62, Lakeland Christian 50 (Jan. 26): Sean Richard scored 20 of his game-high 30 points in the second half, and Mekhi Austin buried four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to help Argos secure a Hoosier Plains road win on Jan. 26.

Austin finished with 18 points, and Luke Stults made all six of his free throws and added 12.

Richard and Stults were a combined 12 for 12 from the line in the fourth quarter. As a team, Argos made 21 of 24 free throws.

Josiah Martin led Lakeland Christian with 27 points, and fellow junior Micah Martin added 19.

Argos trailed 20-19 at halftime, but Richard outscored the entire Lakeland Christian team 12-9 in the third quarter as Argos came back to lead 36-29.
