Caston 46, North Judson 38 (Dec. 11):

Allison Craig triggered a game-closing 8-0 run with a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:47 left, and Madi Douglass had 24 points and eight rebounds for the host Lady Comets in a conference win over North Judson Dec. 11.

Caston trailed 33-32 going into the fourth quarter. A Douglass driving scoop layup and a Natalie Warner basket off a Grace Colvin assist put Caston up by three.

North Judson’s Shiloh DeBoard hit a top-of-the-key 3-pointer to tie the game. A Douglass driving layup put Caston back up 38-36, but DeBoard tied it again with an off-balance banker.

Craig said coach Josh Douglass designed a play in the huddle for her to come off a screen, and she hit from the top of the key.

“I’ve been putting up a lot more 3s in the gym and practicing a lot more on dribbling a little bit too,” Craig said of her shooting. “So I’ve been trying to get better at those points in the game.”

Said coach Josh Douglass of Craig’s 3-pointer: “We executed perfectly – honestly. Proud of the girls. We have that in our set. We just haven’t put it in this year, but the way the last two possessions, they started camping a girl right in the center of the basket to stop Madi from driving. So I knew when we cross-screened for (Madi), if she attacked it a little bit and circled back, Allison was hopefully going to be wide open on top if we set a triple-screen for her. It worked out perfectly because that girl did not move from the middle of the lane.”

Douglass made 10 of 14 free throws. She had more free throw attempts than the entire North Judson team (12). Douglass made five of six free throws in the final 1:06 to secure the win.

“Coming in, we knew she was really fast, and she likes to push the ball and get her teammates the ball when they’re open,” North Judson coach Whitney Combs said of Douglass. “She can hit big shots when she needs to, and we saw that tonight.”

Warner had four points and nine rebounds.

DeBoard hit four treys and scored 23 points, but she fouled out with 1:06 left.

Caston held Cailyn Tunis scoreless in the second half.

Caston is 4-1 in their last five meetings with North Judson.

“This means a lot,” Craig said. “We got our HNAC Jug back, so that was exciting. And it was great energy overall, especially since they were ranked ninth so it was really nice to beat them.”

Coach Douglass noted that North Judson won the Hoosier North last year.

“We’ve been struggling to beat good teams, and North Judson is an excellent team,” coach Douglass said. “To be able to get that done, to give these girls some confidence, we’ve been in the big game, that’s what we’ve told them. We’ve been there, but we haven’t been able to finish. And for us tonight to be down five (32-27) … I think we were down in the fourth and to come back and find a way to win and then just shut the faucet off there at the end was tremendous by the girls.”

Caston 71, Oregon-Davis 35 (Nov. 24):

Grace Colvin hit five 3-pointers and scored 23 points, and Madi Douglass had 22 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists for Caston in a Hoosier North home win over Oregon-Davis Nov. 24.

Adyson Steininger hit three 3-pointers – all in the second quarter – and added nine.

Caston made 10 3-pointers while Oregon-Davis made one. Caston also committed only nine turnovers as compared to Oregon-Davis’ 24.

“We’ve been jamming the ball with our ball pressure up top so that we could get in the gap and force turnovers,” Colvin said.

Caston was coming off a 31-21 win over Argos six days earlier. Caston scored 36 points in the first half and 35 in the second half in this game.

“We moved. We cut,” Caston coach Josh Douglass said. “After that Argos game, I think we were mentally tired. We took Wednesday off last week after that game, and we got back at it, and we had really good practices leading up to tonight. And we talked about that. The more you move, the ball will find you when you’re open, and it just flows better, and you just shoot the ball better.”

Caston also held Oregon-Davis point guard Gabriella Krause scoreless. Krause scored 18 against Caston in a 49-45 loss last year.

“Just keep putting pressure on her,” coach Douglass said of the defensive plan against Krause. “I think picking up with the guards that we have and the ability to go as deep as we do, just picking those guards up fullcourt and making them work wears them down and gets them frustrated.”

Madi Douglass outscored the entire Oregon-Davis team 15-14 in the first half as Caston built a 22-point halftime lead.

Colvin outscored the entire Oregon-Davis team 10-9 in the third quarter as the lead reached 36, triggering a running clock for the fourth quarter.

Colvin scored only six points in her previous game against Argos on Nov. 18. She said she had been coming into school early to take extra shots.

“I was just beating myself up,” Colvin said. “I didn’t have myself square to the basket. So as soon as I figured that out, it started going in. … When I come in and I’m nervous in the game, I usually don’t shoot well until I get my feet underneath me and get myself calmed down.”

Sarah Thompson scored 26 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Lady Bobcats, but no teammate scored more than three.

OREGON-DAVIS (35) (3-4, 0-3)

Trinity Vaszari 1 0-0 3, Gabriella Krause 0 0-0 0, Madison Zelaya 0 0-0 0, Eryn MacMillan 1 1-2 3, Sarah Thompson 9 8-12 26, Alivia Edwards 1 0-0 2, Victoria Nagai 0 1-2 1
