Caston sports briefs: Volleyball season ends with loss to Northfield

BY VAL TSOUTSOURIS

Volleyball

Northfield def. Caston, 25-13, 25-13, 25-11 (Saturday): Maddi Smith had six kills, two blocks, two digs and 31 serves received, but the Lady Comets lost to No. 5 Northfield in a Class 1A, Sectional 52 semifinal at Pioneer Saturday.

Kinzie Mollenkopf had 12 serves received, and Addison Zimpleman and Isabel Scales had nine serves received each.

Abby Williamson had seven blocks.

Caston finished 12-17.

“We played well at times, got some nice blocks and tried to serve aggressively,” Caston coach Melinda Shultz said. “We struggled to pass against some really strong Northfield hitters. However, this year’s varsity team has really turned the program around. We won more games this year than the volleyball team has won in a long time, and we were competitive against a lot of really good teams. Although we lose two seniors, Rebekah Milburn and Layne Oliver, the program has so much potential. I’m excited to see where Comet volleyball goes in the future.”

In the other semifinal, Pioneer beat Lakeland Christian in three games. Pioneer then went on to beat Northfield in five games in the sectional final that night.
