Pioneer senior Aspen Moolenaar won the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, long jump and pole vault at the Hoosier North track meet at Culver Tuesday, helping the Lady Panthers finish in second place.

Pioneer scored 109 points. Triton won with 123.5 points.

The other Pioneer champion was sophomore Emilee Juby, who won the discus with a throw of 104-8.

Moolenaar won the 100 hurdles in 16.75 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 49.62 seconds. Nobody was within a second of her in the 100 hurdles, and only one other runner was within two seconds of her in the 300 hurdles. She also long-jumped 15-9 ½ and won by eight inches and pole-vaulted 9-6 and won by a foot.

Meanwhile, Winamac’s Sadie Popejoy won the 100, 200 and 400 meters while teammate Avery Wegner won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters. They helped Winamac place third with 99 points.

Popejoy won the 100 in 13.33 seconds and the 200 in 27.80 seconds, edging out Culver’s Ava McCune in both races. Her 400 time of 1:03.70 was a personal best and beat out Caston’s Camila Hernandez-Rios by 0.59 seconds. Popejoy also finished second in the discus behind Juby with a top throw of 101-0.

Wegner won the 800 in 2:41.10, the 1,600 in 6:02.34 and the 3,200 in a personal best 13:29.48. Runners from Triton finished second and third in all three races.

Among other area teams, Caston was fourth with 76.5 points, North Miami was fifth with 74, Culver was sixth with 57, and Argos was eighth with 26.

The other area champion on the track was Caston’s 4 x 400 relay team, which consisted of Autumn Sanders, Hannah Rogers, Grace Colvin and Camila Hernandez-Rios. That team ran a 4:31.56 and beat runner-up Triton by nearly five seconds.

Hernandez-Rios was also sixth in the 100 and fourth in the 200 in addition to the relay and her runner-up showing in the 400. Rogers was also fourth in the 800 and 1,600 and fifth in the 3,200.

In addition to Moolenaar and Juby, other area athletes to win field event titles included North Miami high jumper Grace Sailors, who cleared 4-10 and beat Winamac’s Kandace Kroft on the fewest-misses tiebreaker; and North Miami shot putter Andrea Hoover, who had a throw of 35-2 to beat runner-up Laylah Demond of Pioneer by over three feet.

Sailors, a Franklin College recruit for volleyball and track, was also second in the 100 hurdles behind Moolenaar, fifth in the discus and eighth in the shot put.

In addition to her runner-up performances in the 100 and 200, McCune was also part of the 4 x 100 relay that finished second – teammates included Eliana Andrzejewski, Kaira Luhnow and Julia Stoch – and took fourth in the 300 hurdles.

Triton won the team title despite winning only one event – the 4 x 800 relay.
