Peterson’s 37 helps Culver shock Triton

Girls basketball: Culver 56, Triton 48 (Feb. 5)

Rose Peterson hit eight 3-pointers and scored a career-high 37 points as Culver

stunned Triton 56-48 in a Class 1A, Sectional 50 quarterfinal at Culver’s John R. Nelson Gymnasium on Feb. 5.

Peterson hit four 3-pointers in the third quarter as Culver rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to tie the game at 35 going into the fourth quarter. She hit another trey and scored 11 more points in the fourth quarter.

Peterson outscored the entire Triton team 26-24 in the second half.

Grace Sieber added six points, all in the fourth quarter.

Culver had lost to Triton 71-34 on Jan. 14 in their regular season meeting. Culver had lost their previous nine meetings to Triton prior to Feb. 5 and had not beaten Triton since the 2015 Bi-County tournament. Culver had not beaten Triton on their home floor since Jan. 15, 2010.

Culver (5-17) had lost seven straight games to close out the regular season.

Addyson Viers led Triton with 18 points while Jocelynn Faulkner added 15.

Taren Yates, Triton’s senior point guard who scored 19 points in the Jan. 14 game, was held to five points this time.

Culver made 10 of 15 free throws while Triton was 6 for 16.

Culver’s season ended with a 61-25 loss to Argos in the semifinals on Feb. 7. The Lady Cavaliers finished 5-18. Lizzie Pugh was the team’s lone senior.
