Three individual athletes – all freshmen – and the 4 x 400 relay were among the Pioneer athletes to advance to the regional from the Western girls track sectional Tuesday.
As a team, Pioneer scored 37.5 points and finished seventh in the 13-team field.
Mackenzie Rogers finished second in the 400 meters in 1:03.26 and advanced. Western’s Chase Hayes won the race in 1:00.73.
Violet Montgomery also advanced, claiming second in the 3,200 in 12:20.62. Only Kokomo’s Julynne Spidell was faster in 11:54.73.
Blair Grigsby also advanced after clearing 4-10 and finishing in a tie for fourth in the high jump.
Grigsby and Rogers also ran legs of the 4 x 400 relay that finished third. Anna Lela and Anna Shewalter joined them on the team. Lela, a junior, is the only non-freshman on the team.
Montgomery was also fifth but did not advance in the 1,600 after running a 5:55.17.
Other Pioneer scorers included Esther McKaig, who was sixth in the shot put; Kennedy Corn, who was seventh in the discus; and the 4 x 800 relay, which placed seventh.
Lewis Cass won the sectional with 102 points. Western was second with 99.5.
The title is Lewis Cass’s first sectional title in girls track since 1992.
The top three finishers in each event advanced to regional, plus the next four best performances in the sectionals feeding into the regional.
