Return of the ‘mac:’ Warriors return after 2 weeks off, blank Culver on homecoming

WINAMAC –- Russell Compton threw two touchdown passes to Jaden Terry, and Hayden Clark ran for two touchdowns as the Winamac football team returned from a two-week COVID pause to blank conference and sectional rival Culver 28-0 at Roudebush Field Friday.

The Class 1A, No. 4 Warriors improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Hoosier North.

Clark led Winamac with 70 yards rushing, and Compton added 68 in addition to 121 passing yards.

Caleb Good had an interception on defense, and Zayne Bell recovered two fumbles. Kyle Olds had eight tackles, and Logan Schultz had seven.

Shane Shuman ran for 104 yards for Culver, who fell to 1-3, 0-3. Shuman also led the Culver defense with eight tackles, a sack and three tackles for loss.

The shutout was Winamac’s first since a 42-0 win over North White in their 2020 season opener and their first against Culver since 1987.

Winamac’s win also broke a streak of four straight years in which the visiting team won the Winamac-Culver game.

Max Murray made all four of his extra point tries, but perhaps the biggest special teams play was Shawn Pratt’s 58-yard return of the opening kickoff.

Winamac followed with a six-play, 41-yard touchdown drive. They converted a second-and-21 when Compton found Terry for 25 yards down to the Culver 1, and Clark scored on the next play.

Winamac’s second drive also ended up in the end zone after Jaxon Roudebush broke up a Tucker Fisher pass on fourth down that was intended for Marquez Anderson.

That gave Winamac the ball at their 41, and a 10-play, 59-yard drive ensued.

Jadon Jones had a 16-yard run on the drive, and Compton capped it off by hitting Terry on an underneath route on second-and-goal from the 16. Terry cut back inside for the score to make it 14-0.

Culver followed with another 12-play, 63-yard drive that took over six-and-a-half minutes off the clock. But the drive stalled on downs on the Winamac 17.

After an exchange of turnovers – Terry fumbled after a reception for Winamac followed by a bobbled exchange between Fisher and running back Blake Thompson for Culver – Winamac took over at their own 37 with 57.7 seconds left in the half.

They then executed the two-minute drill in 52 seconds. Jones had a 14-yard reception, Terry had a 12-yard catch, and Brayden Heater had a 15-yard catch and was able to get out of bounds at the Culver 17 with 15.1 seconds left.

Two plays later, with three receivers lined up in the trips formation to Compton’s right, he found Terry for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead with 5.3 seconds left in the half.

On the first drive of the third quarter, Culver got two more first downs before Bell’s second fumble recovery gave Winamac the ball on their own 46.

They followed with a five-play drive – all five plays were runs – for a touchdown with Clark getting the score on a 24-yard sweep.
