Rochester junior Makenna Beall, the school record holder in both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, advanced to the sectional finals in both events at the Warsaw sectional preliminaries Thursday.

Beall qualified fourth in the 200 freestyle in 2:06.00 and qualified second in the 500 freestyle in 5:40.99. Her school records are 2:02.51 in the 200 freestyle, which was set at the Three Rivers Conference meet at Maconaquah on Jan. 22, and 5:25.76 in the 500 freestyle, which was set at the 2019 state meet.

Rochester

Beall is the two-time defending sectional champion in the 500 freestyle. Culver Academy junior Emily Heim was the top qualifier in the 500 freestyle in 5:35.36. Heim finished second behind Beall at the 2020 sectional in the 500 freestyle.

Beall was one of four RHS swimmers to advance to a sectional final.

Senior Ellie Shank qualified eighth and also advanced with Beall to the 200 freestyle final in 2:16.47. Sophomore Bella Riffle qualified eighth in the 100 butterfly in 1:10.14. Junior Elena Bode qualified fifth in the 100 freestyle in 59.57 seconds.

The 200 freestyle relay team consisting of Bode, Riffle, Kendyll Bradley and Beall qualified third in 1:51.39 behind Culver Academy and Warsaw.

Also, the 400 freestyle relay team consisting of Shank, Elizabeth Swango, Zoe Seward and Riffle qualified fifth in 4:27.66.

The 200 medley relay team was disqualified.

Rochester swimmers advancing to consolation finals included Seward in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, Bode and Elizabeth Swango in the 200 individual medley, Bradley in the 50 and 100 freestyles, Madilyn Calloway in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Melody Hisey in the 100 freestyle, Shank in the 500 freestyle and Riffle in the 100 backstroke.

Tippecanoe Valley

The lone Valley swimmer to advance to an individual sectional final was sophomore Makena Smith, who swam a 1:19.07 in the 100 breaststroke and qualified eighth.

Valley also qualified sixth in the 200 freestyle relay and seventh in both the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.

The 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams consisted of Smith, Kendall Craig, Maddie Woodward and Shayleigh Honeycutt. The 400 freestyle relay team consisted of Ava Craig, Katelyn Lowman, Alejandra Jimenez and Olivia Wilson.

Both the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay teams from Pioneer qualified eighth and advanced to the finals.

The 200 freestyle relay team consisted of Emily Chan, Mackenzie Robinson, Lane Hood and Chloe Chan. The 400 freestyle relay team consisted of Esther McKaig, Emma Elliott, Ayla Depoy and Keigen Reno.

Those Pioneer swimmers who will be swimming in a consolation race Saturday include Emily Chan in the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle, Chloe Chan in the 100 butterfly and Mackenzie Robinson in the 100 butterfly.

The top eight preliminary times in each event advanced to the final. The next eight fastest times will swim in the consolation race. Those qualifying 17th and 18th are alternates.

The entire diving competition will be held Saturday. Diving preliminaries will start at 9 a.m. All swimming and diving finals will begin at 1 p.m.

In order to qualify for the IHSAA state finals in a swimming event, an individual or relay team must win their sectional title, meet a difficult state qualifying standard or be the next fastest times in order to achieve a field of 32 in each event.

The top four divers advance to the Valparaiso diving regional on Tuesday. Pioneer’s Grace Ulrich is the defending sectional diving champion.
