Boys golf

Rochester takes 11th at Don Dicken Classic: The Rochester boys golf team shot a 390 and finished 11th out of 14 teams at the Don Dicken Classic at Stonehenge Golf Club in Winona Lake Saturday.

Drew Strasser

Drew Strasser led Rochester with an 85, Noah Riffle had a 96, Dryden Vance had a 99, Wesley Meadows had a 110, and Robert Bozzo had a 121.

Westfield won the title with a 307. Westfield’s Jake Cesare was the medalist with a 75.

Rochester JV finishes 14th at home invite: The Rochester JV boys golf team shot a 504 and finished 14th out of 14 teams at the Rochester JV Invitational at Round Barn Golf Club at Mill Creek Saturday.

Enrique Navarro led Rochester with a 115, Brady Morgan had a 124, Kaeven Brown had a 130, and Karsyn McKee had a 135.

Culver Academy won the team title with a 362, four strokes lower than runner-up Northridge. Culver’s Academy’s Jaxson Wiernik was the medalist with an 81.

Culver Academy 174, Rochester 191, Tippecanoe Valley 200 (Thursday): Dryden Vance shot a 46, but the Zebras finished second in a three-way match against host Culver Academy and Valley at the Academy Course Thursday.

Other Rochester scores included Drew Strasser’s 48, Robert Bozzo’s 48, Wesley Meadows’ 49, and Noah Riffle’s 51.

Culver Academy’s Jordan Larese and Owen Hart were co-medalists with a 41.

Rochester/Culver at Winamac, ppd.: The three-way boys golf match between Rochester, Culver and host Winamac Monday was postponed due to inclement weather and rescheduled for Tuesday.

Start time is 4:30 p.m. at Moss Creek Golf Club.

Baseball

Rochester at Northwestern, canceled: The Rochester-Northwestern baseball game scheduled for Monday was canceled due to inclement weather.

Rochester is a defending Class 2A sectional champion while Northwestern is a defending Class 3A sectional champion.

Rochester adds Eastern to schedule: The Rochester baseball team has added a home game with Eastern (Greentown) to their schedule. Game time is 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Bob Copeland Field. Eastern is 6-0 and ranked No. 8 in Class 2A.

Softball

Eastern (Greentown) at Rochester, canceled: The Eastern-Rochester softball game scheduled for Fansler Field Monday was canceled due to inclement weather.

Rochester 13, Culver 2 (5 innings, Friday): Emma Howdeshell doubled, tripled and drove

Mia Howdeshell

in three runs for the host Lady Zs in a win over Culver at Fansler Field Friday, and Mia Howdeshell went 3 for 3 with two doubles, a single and two RBIs for Rochester in a home win over Culver Friday.

Darah Strasser went 3 for 3 with two runs scored. Sydney Haughs singled, tripled and drove in a run. Kallie Watson also had two hits and an RBI. Kylie Coleman and Keyton Doran each had a hit and an RBI. Olivia Powell also had a hit.

Strasser pitched a five-hitter with five walks, a hit batter and six strikeouts. One of the runs she allowed was unearned.

Rochester scored nine runs in the first inning to take a 9-1 lead.

Girls tennis

Rochester at Triton, canceled: The Rochester-Triton girls tennis match scheduled for Monday was canceled due to inclement weather.

Rochester has back-to-back home Three Rivers Conference matches against Peru and Whitko on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Both matches will start at 5 p.m.

Track

Rochester 72, Whitko 47, Lakeland Christian 17 (girls, April 14)

Macie Nelson won both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, and the Rochester girls track team also swept the three longest distance races in a home win over Whitko and Lakeland Christian on April 14.

Nelson ran the 100 hurdles in 18.0 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 57.7 seconds. Araceli Ochoa won the 800 in 2:55.5, Zoe Seward won the 1,600 in 6:08.6, and Madilyn Calloway won the 3,200 in 12:49.1.

Kendyll Bradley

The other Lady Z to win an individual event was junior Kennedy Jackson in the shot put.

Rochester also swept all three relays. The 4 x 100 relay consisted of Kenzie Bradley, Savanah Eccles, Lilly Watson and Kasey Gray. The 4 x 400 relay consisted of Isabel Dunwoody, Audrey Wagoner, Emily Basham and Kendyll Bradley. The 4 x 800 relay consisted of Ava Thomas, Elena Bode, Kendyll Bradley and Lucy Rangel.

In the boys meet, Rochester athletes won 13 of the 14 events contested to roll to the victory. Layne Backus won the 100 meters, Alex Deming won the 400, and they also formed 50 percent of the victorious 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays. Other Zebra individual winners included Zach Pickens in the 200; Lane Shank in the 800; R.J. Keranko in the 1,600; Chris Rohr, who ran unopposed in the 3,200; Kaiden Towell in the 110 hurdles; Braxton Mencias in the long jump; Eli Swango in the discus; and Marshall Fishback in the shot put.

Mencias and Jarret Regan joined Backus and Deming on the 4 x 100 relay. Pickens Peyton Hiatt joined Backus and Deming on the 4 x 400 relay. Dylan Steininger and Wes Steininger joined Shank and Rohr on the 4 x 800 relay.

The high jump and pole vault were not contested due to high winds.

Girls basketball

Burrus hired: The Rochester School Board formally approved the hiring of new girls basketball coach Joel Burrus at Monday’s meeting. The vote was 6-0 in favor of the hire.

Burrus spent the past five seasons as the boys basketball coach at Trinity Greenlawn.
