The Culver Academy volleyball team beat Rochester 25-14, 25-21, 20-25, 27-25 at the RHS gym Thursday night.
The Lady Zs trailed 24-20 in Game 4 but scored five straight points.
Emily Hughes started the run with a kill off the CGA block. Then the Lady Eagles missed on a dig. Taylor Bowen had a look at a kill and missed wide right.
A Hughes kill which was chased around the court by three valiant Lady Eagle diggers before finally hitting the floor tied the game at 24.
A well-placed roll shot from freshman Audrey Bolinger had the Lady Zs within a point of forcing a fifth game.
Hughes had a look at a kill, but she missed wide left to tie the game at 25. A crosscourt kill from the outside made it 26-25, and Sami Jorgensen ended the match with another kill.
“We struggled with serve receive, and we also struggled with terminating plays tonight,” Rochester coach Erin Leap. “They had a really big block. They had some really hard hitters. We just struggled lining up and figuring out where they were going. They were a good team.”
Hughes leads the team in kills, and her jump serve is a low, spinning heater.
“We depend on her for our fire a little bit,” Leap said. “So as soon as she gets to stomping and gets excited, then everybody kind of joins in and follows, and then the intensity raises a little bit. Emily always does a good job, especially there in the fourth set. She was like a one-man band.”
