PERU — Audrey Bolinger had a team-high 13 kills and five blocks, but host Peru rallied to beat the Rochester volleyball team 25-22, 16-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-9 at Tig-Arena Thursday.
Freshman Amara Wieringa had nine kills, and Lillee Lett, Aubrey Wilson and Avarie Montel added six kills each.
Rylee Clevenger, Darah Strasser and Wilson had two aces each.
Mia Howdeshell had 43 digs and 22 serves received, Logyn Honkomp had 16 digs and 16 serves received, Clevenger had 12 digs and 16 serves received, and Wilson had 10 digs and 40 assists. Strasser added 14 serves received.
Rochester had a 14-7 lead in Game 4 and an 8-3 lead in Game 5 before Peru rallied to win both games and the match. Lett left with a right leg injury with Rochester holding a 5-2 lead in Game 5.
This marked Peru’s first win over Rochester since the schools became TRC rivals in 2015.
Rochester had 50 kills as compared to Peru’s 33, but Peru had 14 aces as compared to Rochester’s seven.
Peru scored nine consecutive points to take a 12-8 lead in Game 5. Senior Ila Johnson confounded Rochester with her serve, and she finished with 16 points. Junior Kaelen Edwards’ lefty serve results in a team-high 17 points.
“We couldn’t serve-receive the ball,” Rochester coach Laneia Strasser said. “It all starts with the pass. I’ve said it from the get-go. The fundamentals of the pass … couldn’t pass the ball.”
Peru also went on a 6-1 run in the first set to take a 21-16 lead.
“That happened to us in each set that we lost,” coach Strasser said. “I say it all the time. It’s the simplest side of volleyball, but for some reason, we struggle with it sometimes. We get behind four or five points, and it’s hard to come back from that.”
Coach Strasser said Lett “came down on her ankle funny.”
“It’s hard,” coach Strasser said when asked about the impact of Lett’s injury. “When you don’t have the girls who are your dominating hitters, it’s hard. It’s hard to constantly have to change your lineup, to spread out those dominating hitters. And it’s hard for the girls. I think it’s a difference maker in how that game plays out.”
Rochester went on a 10-0 run in Game 2 to take a 12-3 lead. Coach Strasser was asked if Rochester picked up their tempo during that run.
“We did,” she said. “That’s the tempo we need to play at all the time in order to be successful. We practice at that tempo, so we need to play at that tempo.”
It also appeared Rochester exposed the middle of Peru’s defense with tipping, but Peru rallied. First-year coach Samantha Carey said her team picked up the intensity. This win stopped a 19-match conference losing streak.
“Well, I told them, ‘Hey, we’re not playing Southwood anymore,’” Carey said. “‘So you don’t need to be, like, ready to take one to the face.’ And they couldn’t find the inside of the court for awhile, so I said they’re going to be playing smart and they’re going to be tipping. We finally got off our heels and were able to read that a little bit better, but for awhile, we got a little bit gun shy. Luckily, we got over it.”
Rochester won the JV match 25-10, 23-25, 15-6.

The match marked the return for Rochester coach Laneia Strasser and freshman Amara Wieringa.
Strasser had not coached the team since the Plymouth match on Aug. 17 due to a health matter in her family. Wieringa had been in concussion protocol since the Plymouth match.
Rochester scored eight consecutive points in Game 4 to take a 9-3 lead. Davis had a kill, but Brailyn Hunter put down a kill off the block, and a Bolinger service winner and an Bolinger ace were part of another 4-0 run as the lead reached 13-4.
Triton would fight back to take an 18-17 lead. A Wieringa ace and a Viers kill error put Rochester up 22-20, and Triton coach Derek Eveland called his final timeout.
Triton would tie the match at 22-22 and 23-23. A Viers kill error gave Rochester a match point. A Clara Doll tip tied it at 24.
But Davis missed long on a two-handed tip, and another long rally ended with Triton committing a free ball that landed just outside the baseline on match point.
