Scales records double-double, but Lady Comets fall to Marquette Catholic at semistate

The Caston girls basketball team went 22-4 and won Cass County Invitational, Miami County Invitational, Hoosier North, sectional and regional titles.

Marquette Catholic 41, Caston 34 (Saturday): Isabel Scales scored 13 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out three assists, but the No. 7 Caston girls basketball team lost to No. 5 Marquette Catholic in a Class 1A semistate semifinal at Frankfort Saturday.

Annie Harsh nailed three 3-pointers and scored nine points, and Madi Douglass had eight for Caston, who finished 22-4. Addison Zimpleman contributed two points and 11 rebounds.

The game was the last in the prep careers for seniors Scales, Harsh, Zimpleman, Alexa Finke and Macee Hinderlider.

Laniah Davis hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored a game-high 26 points for Marquette Catholic (23-4). She also had seven rebounds. No other Marquette Catholic player had more than six points.

Facing a pressing, trapping defense, Caston committed 19 turnovers as compared to Marquette Catholic’s 11. Caston also made just four of 12 free throws while Marquette Catholic was nine for 10.

Caston led 17-11 in the second quarter before Marquette Catholic closed the half on a 9-0 run to take a 20-17 lead. They maintained a 33-30 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Caston won their first sectional title since 1985 and their first regional title ever this season. They also won their second straight Hoosier North title as well as their second straight Cass County Invitational and their fourth straight Miami County Invitational.

In the other semifinal, No. 2 Clinton Central routed Union City 42-18. Marquette Catholic then went on to beat

Clinton Central 72-70 in the final later Saturday.

Marquette Catholic will play No. 1 Lanesville in the state championship game at 10:30 a.m. this Saturday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
