Smith’s 3 TDs, Sullivan’s 3 picks help Caston break 29-game skid

No. 5 Pioneer blanks Lewis Cass in sectional rematch; Culver falls to N. Judson

Caston 38, West Central 6 (Friday): Sam Smith ran for 93 yards, had 30 yards receiving and scored three touchdowns as the visiting Comets routed West Central Friday to break their 29-game losing streak and give Will Porter a win in his first game as Caston coach.

Landon Shafer completed five of six passes for 73 yards. Smith had two receptions, and Grant Hickle, Damian Sullivan and Jessie Rock-Wolf had one reception each.

Sullivan also had three interceptions on defense, and Hickle recovered a fumble on a punt return.

The Caston defense forced five turnovers and held West Central to 109 yards of offense.

Smith led the defense in tackles. He averaged over eight yards per carry on offense.

Caston led 20-0 at halftime.

Pioneer 44, Lewis Cass 0 (Friday): Ezra Lewellen ran for 209 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries to lead the Class 2A, No. 5 Panthers to a road win over No. 10 Lewis Cass Friday.

Addai Lewellen ran for 24 yards and a touchdown and also caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Cayden Hill. Brock Robinson also had a touchdown run.

Ezra Lewellen also scored three two-point conversions, and Robinson had a two-point conversion.

The game marked the first meeting between the teams since Lewis Cass knocked Pioneer out of last year’s sectional with a 43-8 win. Pioneer’s only two losses since the start of the 2017 season were to Lewis Cass last year.

Pioneer has shut out Lewis Cass in five of their last seven meetings.

North Judson 63, Culver 20 (Friday): Jalen King, Blake Thompson and Shane Shuman all had over 80 yards rushing, but the visiting Cavaliers lost to sectional rival North Judson Friday.

King had 91 yards on 15 carries. Thompson had 91 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Shuman had 81 yards on 11 carries, including a 59-yard touchdown.

Culver had 278 yards of total offense.

North Judson quarterback Trey Hampton completed all five of his passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 66 yards and two more scores.

North Judson had 478 yards of total offense. North Judson led 35-12 at halftime.

This was the teams’ first meeting since North Judson eliminated Culver 15-14 in last year’s Class 1A, Sectional 41 final.
