Smith scores 10, leads balanced Caston into Cass County Invite title game

Boys basketball

Caston 50, Pioneer 32 (Wednesday): Sam Smith scored 10 points to lead Caston in a win over Pioneer in the first round of the Cass County Invitational at the Berry Bowl at Logansport Wednesday.

Bryce Rudicel added nine points, Jessie Rock-Wolf had eight, and Kade Zeider and Colby Pugh had seven each.

Seven different Caston players scored. Four different players made a 3-pointer.

Jacob Zeigler led Pioneer with nine points. Oscar Solano and Hunter Klepinger had eight each.

Caston led 9-2 after one quarter and 32-10 at halftime.

Caston’s Cam Kline and Grant Hickle and Pioneer’s Ezra Lewellen and Addai Lewellen all did not play.

This was the teams’ first meeting since Caston beat Pioneer 44-40 in the sectional final at Caston on March 7.

This also marked the coaching debut for Pioneer’s Darren McKaig.

The teams will meet again at Pioneer on Jan. 29 in their Hoosier North meeting.

Pioneer will play Lewis Cass in the consolation game at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Logansport. Caston and Logansport will meet in the championship game at approximately 8:15 p.m.

Pioneer 49, Caston 32 (Wednesday): Caston lost to Pioneer in the first round of the Cass County Invitational at Logansport Wednesday.

Caston will play Lewis Cass in the consolation game at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Pioneer will play Logansport in the championship game at approximately 1 p.m.

In the JV game, Caston topped Pioneer 53-31. Emma Kay scored 16 points, and Mikayla Kinser added 12, Macee Hinderlider and Kinzie Mollenkopf added nine each, and Alexa Finke had seven points and eight rebounds.
