DQs costly in girls loss to Wabash, but Brown sees improvement

Kylie Haselby won two blue ribbons, but the Rochester girls swimming team lost 78-76 to visiting Wabash at the Rochester Middle School pool on Dec. 5.
Meanwhile, Rochester won the boys meet 87-76 even though Wabash won seven of the 11 events.
Haselby won the diving competition, and she also swam the opening leg on the 400 freestyle relay, which ran unopposed. Jenna Seuferer, Ava Thomas and Skyla Mitchell swam the other three legs.
Wabash won the other 10 girls events.
Rochester coach Stephanie Brown reported 15 personal bests, and that came three days after 17 personal bests at the Warsaw Invitational.
Disqualifications were costly for the Lady Zs in both the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. Had Rochester simply finished both races legally, they would have gained an additional six points in a meet they lost by two.
“It was a fun meet,” Brown said. “Like I said, we had some DQs. We probably would have won the meet if we hadn’t. But they had at least one DQ on their end also, so you just never know.”
In the boys meet, Rochester winners included Wes Steininger, who took the 200 freestyle in 2:14.58; Jake Seuferer, who won the 200 individual medley in 2:08.42; and Tanner Reese, who won the 500 freestyle in 5:55.59 and beat the field by 37 seconds.
Steininger, Seuferer and Reese also teamed up with Reece Johnson to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:54.13.
Steininger said his goal in the 200 freestyle was merely to win the race. He said he has done little distance training. He was also third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.37, another unfamiliar event.
“The 200 free has never been my event,” Steininger said. “I am by far a sprinter, so I think the fastest I ever went was 2:12 in that, and that was like freshman year since I never race that event,” Steininger said. “So I’ll take a 2:14 for sure with how much distance work I am doing. … A majority of what I do is stroke work, so IM stuff and sprint stuff. I’m not focusing on endurance in the freestyle.”
Brown told the kids to keep the meet times in perspective given how hard they are working in practice.
“And like we tell the kids, when we swim two meets a week, you’re not going to swim faster every time you swim. It just doesn’t work that way. Yesterday was a really tough practice. … Last night’s workout kind of beat them up a little bit.”
